The story
Indienne occupies a renovated 19th-century printing warehouse on West Huron Street in Chicago's River North — a space with deep roots in the city's restaurant history. Chef Sujan Sarkar, originally from Kolkata, sharpened his craft in London's Michelin-starred kitchens, where he developed a serious affinity for French technique. At Indienne, those two worlds converge: Indian flavors, French discipline, and a format — the tasting menu — that gives both room to breathe.
The restaurant earned its first Michelin Star in fall 2023 and has held it through 2024 and 2025. Its wine program carries a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence (2024), a recognition that reflects the care put into pairings that can include a curated wine selection or a spirit-free alternative.
What sets Indienne apart structurally is its commitment to inclusive fine dining. Rather than a single tasting menu with substitutions, the kitchen produces four distinct seasonal menus — Vegetarian, Vegan, Pescatarian, and Non-Vegetarian — each thoughtfully composed in its own right. This is French-Indian cuisine taken seriously across every dietary preference.
Dishes on the current non-vegetarian menu give a sense of the kitchen's sensibility: Hamachi with cucumber, avocado, and Sol Kadi; Lobster Ghee Roast with Ela Ada, sunchoke, and mango; and Chicken Makhni served alongside Black Dairy Dal and garlic naan. The meal closes with Kaju Katli — a pistachio, nougat, and milk ice cream riff on the classic Indian sweet — followed by petit-four treats of coffee, mango, and ginger.
For those who prefer to skip the reservation, bar bites are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the bar — a more casual entry point into the same kitchen.
The team at Indienne is described as guiding guests with warmth through an experience that is both nourishing and artistic — and the structure of the evening supports that. Wine pairings start at $95, with a reserve upgrade available, and a spirit-free pairing at $70. The dining room operates by reservation; the bar does not.
