The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Piece of Charlotte History, Set for Dinner

The building at 511 North Church Street has been part of Charlotte's story since 1891. The Queen Anne/Shingle-style home — considered by architectural historians to be possibly the finest representative of that style in North Carolina — was the residence of the McNinch family for most of its history, including the tenure of Mayor Samuel Sylvanus McNinch, who served from 1905 to 1907 and once hosted President William Howard Taft within these walls.

In 1978, Charlotte native Ellen Davis purchased the property and spent a decade restoring it. She opened McNinch House Restaurant in January 1989, stepping into the kitchen herself as a largely self-taught cook. "I'm living my dream," she said at the time. That founding spirit — personal, passionate, rooted in place — still defines the restaurant more than three decades later.

The Setting

The interior is as much a draw as the food. Victorian craftsmen, led by architect Karl Bitter — who worked on similar designs at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville — created the richly molded woodwork that runs throughout the house. Ten tiled fireplaces include a three-way fireplace opening simultaneously into the foyer, library, and dining room. Interior designer Cheri Button Penuel has overseen the space for over 30 years, layering seasonal decorating and period-appropriate details that honor both the Victorian era and the vision of the late Ellen Davis. The house is listed on the National Historic Register.

The Menu

McNinch House offers American and French fine dining through a structured, multi-course format. The Premier Menu runs four courses; the Grand Menu extends to five. For those who want the kitchen's full attention, the Chef's Tasting presents a five-course menu curated entirely by the chef, while the Chef's Table — available for parties of four or more with seven days' notice — adds an immersive, course-by-course narrative from the chef directly.

Wine is treated as an equal partner to the food. The late sommelier Anthony "Wes" Wesley shaped the wine program over 22 years, building lists that earned recognition from both Wine Enthusiast and Wine Spectator — the latter granting its Award of Excellence, a distinction the restaurant held continuously from 2011 through 2018. Each evening, wine flight pairings are coordinated between the sommelier and the kitchen to match every course.

Recognition

The breadth of awards accumulated over the restaurant's life reflects consistency rather than a single moment of attention. AAA awarded McNinch House its Four Diamond designation every year from 1998 to 2022. Zagat recognized it for best service, best décor, and most romantic restaurant in Charlotte. OpenTable placed it among the Top 100 Restaurants in the US in 2017. Charlotte Magazine has repeatedly named it among the city's best, including its most romantic restaurant — a title that speaks to the candlelit rooms, the crackling fireplaces, and the unhurried pace of an evening here.

The American and French cuisine, the Victorian architecture, and the decades of accumulated care make McNinch House one of Charlotte's most enduring fine dining addresses.
