The story
Barcelona Wine Bar on West Worthington Avenue brings a clean, rustic take on Spanish cuisine to Charlotte, with tapas shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. The food is grounded and unfussy — the kind of eating that pairs naturally with a glass chosen from a list of nearly 400 wines, a program serious enough to earn Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence in 2020.
The wine list isn't just long — it's curated with a point of view. Barcelona dedicates meaningful space to biodynamic producers, from small-plot growers like Bernabeleva in Sierra de Gredos (where winemaker Marc Isart still tills with a local mule) to celebrated names like Gramona, makers of some of Spain's finest Cava. The philosophy behind these selections comes down to a single question the team returns to again and again: how can the earth make the healthiest grapes?
That thoughtfulness extends to the people building the list. Beverage Director Emily Nevin-Giannini holds a Master Certification in Rioja Wines and a Certified Sherry Wine Specialist designation, and travels extensively to source from small producers using the highest-quality methods. VP of Food & Beverage Innovations Gretchen Thomas is a certified Spanish Wine Educator who scored in the top 15 in the world through the Wine Academy of Spain — and has blended her own spirits on the side.
Barcelona takes education seriously. Their wine classes — including a deep dive into iconic Spanish red wine regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Priorat, and Bierzo — are designed for curious beginners and seasoned enthusiasts alike. The instructors break down terroir, winemaking technique, and regional history in a way that makes every future glass more interesting. It's a natural extension of a Spanish cuisine program that treats both food and wine as subjects worth understanding, not just consuming.
Private events and parties are also accommodated, making the space as practical as it is pleasurable for groups looking to gather around good wine and honest food.
