The story
Bayberry opened in June 2023 as the latest concept from Lessing's Hospitality Group, a family with deep roots in Long Island hospitality. The 5,000-square-foot space on 501 Main Street in Islip was designed with a refreshed, brightened aesthetic that reflects its seaside surroundings — an outdoor patio, a convivial 40-seat bar, and private event spaces that can accommodate over 100 guests.
The restaurant's guiding philosophy is straightforward: local, seasonal, fresh. Executive Chef Billy Muzio shapes a menu that pays homage to Islip's maritime history, leaning into local catch and market-driven ingredients. General Manager Laura Solano keeps the front-of-house running with the same spirit of genuine hospitality the Lessing's group has long been known for.
The American menu moves confidently across land and sea. From the raw bar, the Bayberry Plateau brings together oysters, littleneck clams, jumbo shrimp, and jumbo lump crab — a proper spread for the Long Island shore. Starters like Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes with mango salsa and yuzu aïoli, and Peking Duck Tacos with five spice mango salsa, signal a kitchen comfortable with global accents on a firmly American foundation.
Mains include Grilled Montauk Swordfish over farro with chorizo, roasted tomatoes, and romesco — a dish that speaks directly to the local waters — alongside Steak Frites, Pork Chop Milanese, and the signature Bayberry Chicken with lemon butter. The sushi section adds further range, with rolls like the Spicy Tuna Bomb and the Bayberry Mountain shrimp tempura roll.
A $25 prix fixe lunch (Wednesday through Friday) makes the kitchen accessible at midday, while Happy Hour, After Hours, and a brunch menu round out a program built for regulars as much as special occasions.
Bayberry's wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2025 — recognition that reflects a thoughtful, well-curated selection to match the breadth of the American menu. Imaginative cocktails complete the drinks offering, making the 40-seat bar a destination in its own right.
Bright interiors, an outdoor patio, and flexible private rooms make Bayberry equally suited to a weekday lunch, a weekend brunch, or a large celebration. The setting channels the energy of its seaside Long Island location without leaning on cliché — comfortable, well-appointed, and genuinely welcoming.
