SRV

Boston's first Venetian-style bacaro, SRV serves cicchetti, fresh-milled pasta, made-to-order risotto, and an all-Italian wine list in the South End.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

The Serene Republic of Venice, on Columbus Avenue

SRV — short for Serene Republic of Venice — holds a singular place in Boston's dining landscape as the city's first Venetian-style bacaro and wine bar. Opened in 2016 by Coda Restaurant Group, it occupies a comfortable room at 569 Columbus Avenue in the South End, with both indoor tables and an outdoor option when the weather cooperates. Gambero Rosso has recognized SRV among its selections, a nod to the kitchen's genuine commitment to Italian tradition.

The concept draws directly from the bacaro culture of Venice: a convivial spot where you graze on cicchetti — small, shareable bites — alongside a well-chosen glass. At SRV that translates to baccalà mantecato on black bread, bone marrow arancini with pickled green garlic, and mozzarella in carrozza with red pepper aioli, all priced to encourage ordering several rounds.

Pasta, Risotto, and the Arsenale

Beyond the cicchetti, the kitchen produces pasta from fresh-milled local flour. Current plates include lumache tossed in chili butter with Jonah crab and breadcrumb, agnolotti filled with taleggio, cabbage, leek, and prosciutto, and a radiatore in sugo finto with Calabrian chili crunch. Risotto is made to order — the prosciutto risotto arrives with peach, gorgonzola, and basil; the squid ink version with fennel, piquillo, and vermouth.

For the full experience, the table can opt into the Arsenale Menu — a shared, prix-fixe format that the restaurant describes as paying homage to La Serenissima and representing the SRV team as a whole.

The Bar Program

The wine list is exclusively Italian, spanning Veneto frizzante and Lambrusco Sorbara through Brunello di Montalcino, with a dedicated SRV-label Langhe Nebbiolo. The cocktail menu leans heavily on Italian aperitivo logic — vermouths, grappa, amaro — while the amaro selection alone runs to more than fifty labels, making it one of the more serious such lists in Boston. Italian-inspired cocktails like the SRV Negroni (with tarragon and pink peppercorn) and housemade limoncello round out an after-dinner program that could easily become its own destination.
