The story
Mariel occupies the grand bones of the former Atlantic National Bank at 10 Post Office Square, and the setting suits its ambitions perfectly. Faded beauty and decayed elegance are the deliberate aesthetic — a modern rendition of an elegant restaurant, classic cocktail bar, and vibrant lounge, all rolled into one seamless evening. The Wine Spectator Award of Excellence recognized the depth and care behind the beverage program, and one visit makes clear why the wine list earned that distinction alongside a cocktail menu built for a proper night out.
The Cuban cuisine at Mariel is not a straightforward recreation of the island's classics — it is something more layered. The menu draws on the cultural influences that shaped Cuba itself: the Asian and African communities who migrated there and left their mark on its cooking. Ingredients like sour orange and lulo fruits, bijol spices, white sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, and fufu dough appear throughout, grounding the food in genuine culinary history rather than surface-level nostalgia.
That philosophy plays out dish by dish. Yuca Cheese Puffs come with sofrito remoulade and bijol salt. Fufú Gnocchi — plantain dumplings finished with garlic-brown butter and aji picante — speaks to the African roots of Cuban cooking. The Hamachi Crudo arrives with passion fruit-chili nectar, mango, and pomegranate, while Guava Lamb Ribs are glazed in smoked guava BBQ and finished with jalapeño slaw and pistachio. For larger groups, the 32 oz. prime ribeye chop and a whole Pollo Asado with congri rice and hoisin-jerk BBQ are designed to anchor the table.
The Pressed Cubano — slow-roasted pork, pressed ham, gruyère, pickle mixto, mustard marrón on Cuban bread — is a confident nod to tradition, served at lunch alongside rice bowls built on Cuban rice and black beans, seared queso, and sweet plantains.
Mariel is part of the COJE Management Group, whose signature approach blurs the boundary between restaurant and nightlife without sacrificing either. The dining spaces accommodate everything from intimate dinners to full venue buyouts, and the kitchen extends its reach through a full catering program. The Cuban-inspired cooking here is designed for sharing, for lingering, and for letting the evening stretch well past the last plate.
