The story
Cucina Rústica translates simply as "Rustic Kitchen," and the name says everything about the spirit of the place. Set in Sedona's Village of Oak Creek, the restaurant occupies a space designed to evoke a Tuscan villa — old-world décor, warm walls, and a sense that the Mediterranean is somehow closer than Arizona logic would suggest. Outdoor seating lets the surrounding landscape do its own work.
The restaurant has been part of the Sedona dining scene since 1995, and its Italian cuisine has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for 13 consecutive years — a mark of consistency that speaks louder than any single vintage.
The kitchen is shaped by Chef Lisa Dahl, recognized as one of America's top female chefs and a repeat guest at the James Beard House. Her guiding philosophy — "When you cook with love, you feed the soul" — is not a slogan so much as a working method. Cucina Rústica is one of six restaurants she helms, each with its own character, but this one is where her Italian sensibility is most fully expressed.
The menu moves across the full range of Italian cuisine: antipasti for sharing, handmade pastas, naturally raised grilled meats, and a notable commitment to vegetarian and vegan options that go well beyond afterthought.
Starters include grilled prosciutto-wrapped radicchio bundles filled with mozzarella, PEI mussels in tomato-wine bisque with grilled focaccia, and a Mediterranean sampler with lemon hummus, dolmas, herbed feta, and roasted artichokes. Chef Lisa's seasonal soup benefits the Lisa Dahl Foundation — a small detail that reflects the kitchen's broader values.
Among the pastas, the Torteloni Al Limone — quattro formaggio-filled tortelloni in lemon cream with asparagus, corn, peas, and pine nuts — and the Linguine Alle Vongole with Manila clams, garlic, white wine, and chile-herb butter are signatures worth noting. The Garganelli Don Quixote, featured in Chef Dahl's own cookbook A Romance with Food, pairs grilled chicken and mushrooms in a smoky chipotle cream — an Italian frame with a distinctly Southwestern edge.
From the grill, a Creekstone Farms center-cut filet with gorgonzola mushroom sauce and an Australian rack of lamb marinated with lemon and fresh herbs anchor the meatier end of the menu. The wine list — broad enough to earn sustained recognition from Wine Spectator — matches the range of the food.
The setting rewards lingering. Whether you're at a table inside among the Tuscan-inspired décor or outside with Sedona's landscape as backdrop, Cucina Rústica is built for the kind of dinner that doesn't rush. Private parties are accommodated, and the cocktail and wine bar programs give the space a versatility that carries from lunch through a long evening.
