Sammie's Italian carries a name with real history behind it. The restaurant is named for Mildred Joseph, the matriarch of the Joseph family, who first opened Sammie's Drive-In on this stretch of West 6th Street back in 1939. That lineage runs through every corner of the place — most visibly in Mildred's Room, the semi-private dining space where vintage family photographs line the walls alongside an extensive wine collection that has earned Sammie's a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence for 2025. It's a rare distinction, and one that reflects genuine commitment to the cellar rather than a token list.

The Room and the Feel

Mildred's Room seats up to twelve and sits just off the main dining room — raised and semi-secluded, but still connected to the energy of the floor. The restaurant describes it simply: "In Mildred's Room, it's always Sunday dinner." That phrase does a lot of work. It signals warmth, abundance, and the kind of unhurried Italian-American hospitality that doesn't need to announce itself. The full dining room is also available for buyouts, and family-style service is on offer for private events.

Italian Cooking with an Austin Address

Part of the MML family of Austin restaurants — a group that includes Perla's, Jeffrey's, and Lambert's among others — Sammie's Italian holds its own as the group's dedicated Italian kitchen. The menu spans dinner service most evenings, with Friday lunch added to the week. Valet parking is available on West 6th, which makes the experience a little smoother in a neighborhood that doesn't always cooperate.

The Wine Spectator recognition places Sammie's in select company, and the wine list is clearly central to the identity here — housed literally within Mildred's Room, where the bottles are part of the décor as much as the service.
