The story
The story of Perry's Steakhouse & Grille begins in 1979, when Bob Perry opened a modest meat market in Houston. It was a neighborhood butcher shop first — practical, unpretentious, built on the quality of what was behind the counter. By 1986, Bob's son Chris Perry had persuaded him to add dining tables, and the response from loyal customers made the next step inevitable. In 1993, Chris opened Perry's Steakhouse & Grille, translating the family's deep knowledge of prime cuts into a full fine-dining experience.
That lineage still shapes everything about the Austin Downtown location on West Seventh Street. The steakhouse doesn't simply sell beef — it carries forward decades of butcher-shop discipline about sourcing and selection.
Perry's Steakhouse has built its reputation around USDA Prime beef, tableside carvings, and what the restaurant calls a Rare and Well Done® experience. The most talked-about dish is the Famous Pork Chop, carved tableside by the service team — a ritual that has become something of a signature across all Perry's locations. The bar program, anchored by Perry's Bar 79, extends the experience with handcrafted cocktails, a portfolio of Reserve Wines, and craft beer, making it a natural stop before or after dinner.
The wine program earned Perry's a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, a recognition that reflects the seriousness with which the list is curated and maintained.
The Austin Downtown address is well suited to private gatherings, with banqueting rooms and full event and catering capabilities alongside the main dining room. Whether the occasion is a business lunch, a celebratory dinner, or a larger private party, the space and service are configured to accommodate it. The attentive, tableside-focused approach — a direct inheritance from the original market-and-grill model — runs through every service.
Perry's now operates steakhouse locations across Texas and in cities including Chicago, Denver, Miami, Nashville, and Raleigh. Despite that scale, the group points consistently back to its butcher-shop origins as the reason the steakhouse experience holds together. For the Austin diner, that means a well-practiced kitchen, a wine list recognized by industry peers, and the kind of service that comes from four decades of refining the same core idea: top-quality selection, delivered with care.
