The story
In 1993, restaurateur Rick Wahlstedt and partners set out to capture the spirit and flavors of Saigon in the 1920s, introducing Le Colonial to Manhattan's dining scene. It became an immediate fixture of upscale New York life — the first fine dining Vietnamese restaurant of its kind in the country. Joe King joined the venture for the iconic Chicago opening in 1996, and over three decades the concept has grown to include Atlanta, Houston, Denver, Delray Beach, Lake Forest, and Naples. The Atlanta location carries that same founding ambition: timeless fine dining, famed Vietnamese fare.
Perched in Buckhead Village on Peachtree Road, Le Colonial Atlanta offers several distinct spaces — an expansive main dining room, a breezy veranda, an outdoor lounge, a cozy bar, and a treehouse-like retreat. The atmosphere is warm and romantic without being stiff, and the restaurant politely requests refined dinner attire to match. For private celebrations, dedicated event spaces offer a bespoke setting.
Executive Chef Shuma Kuwamoto leads the kitchen, presenting traditional Vietnamese recipes alongside contemporary interpretations of classic dishes.
The menu reads as a careful balance between heritage and craft. Small plates include Cha Gio — crispy shrimp and pork rolls with Gulf shrimp, heritage pork, and Asian mushrooms — and Banh Cuon, a Hanoi steamed rice crêpe filled with Amish farm chicken and wood ear mushrooms, served with nuoc cham. The Pho Bo is built on a seasoned Wagyu oxtail broth with rice noodles and beef tenderloin, a serious version of a Vietnamese classic.
Among the large plates, Bo Luc Lac (Shaking Beef) stirs filet mignon with sweet onions and farm greens in a lime pepper vinaigrette — a dish that has long been a signature of the Le Colonial experience. The Ca Chim seabass arrives wok-tossed with fennel, lemongrass, dill, and banh hoi, finished with a buttery lime au jus. Curries, stir-fries, and clay pot preparations round out a menu that covers considerable ground without losing focus.
The wine program earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2020, reflecting the care taken to pair a serious cellar with the layered flavors of Vietnamese cuisine. It's the kind of recognition that reinforces what thirty years of consistent hospitality already suggest: Le Colonial Atlanta is a restaurant that takes every detail seriously.
