Barcelona Wine Bar

Spanish tapas, nearly 500 wines, and a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence at Barcelona Wine Bar on Howell Mill Road, Atlanta.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Spanish Tradition, Rooted in Atlanta

Barcelona Wine Bar began in Norwalk, Connecticut in 1996, when partners Andy Pforzheimer and Sasa Mahr-Batuz opened what became one of the first authentic Spanish restaurants in the United States. The concept was straightforward from the start: casual, eclectic, and genuinely fun — a transplant of the energy you'd find at the food stalls of Barcelona's Boqueria Market or Valencia's Central Market, without sacrificing any of the craft behind it. The Atlanta location on Howell Mill Road carries that same spirit.

The Food

The kitchen prepares tapas that are both simple and elegant, shaped by Mediterranean, Spanish, and South American influences. Seasonal picks from local markets meet unusual specialties from Spain, and the flavors are bold without being overwrought. Every location has its own Executive Chef who writes the menu — the concept is deliberately chef-driven, meaning the Spanish cuisine here stays alive and responsive rather than fixed.

A Wine Program Worth the Trip Alone

The wine list is one of the most serious Spanish wine programs in the country, and Wine Spectator has recognized it with its Best of Award of Excellence — an honor the broader Barcelona group first earned in 2012 and has held since. The numbers are striking: approximately 500 selections spanning more than 100 regions, with 40-plus wines available by the glass in both 3oz and 6oz pours, so guests can build their own flights freely. Half the list is Spanish, 15% South American, and 75% overall is Old World. Crucially, half the bottles are priced under $50.

The program is overseen by Gretchen Thomas, VP of Food & Beverage Innovations, who holds certifications from WSET, CMS, CSW, and NOSA and ranked in the top 15 in the world as a certified Spanish Wine Educator. Beverage Director Emily Nevin-Giannini holds a Master Certification in Rioja Wines and is a Certified Sherry Wine Specialist, and she travels extensively to source from small producers committed to quality over trend. Their shared philosophy — patience, art, genius, and dedication — runs through every selection, with a strong emphasis on biodynamic, organic, and natural winemaking.

The Atmosphere

Barcelona Wine Bar does not dress itself up as something formal. The aim is to preserve the casual tradition of Spain's tapas bars while proving that casual dining does not have to mean a mediocre experience. Outdoor seating, a strong cocktail program alongside the wines, and a space suited to both drop-in dinners and private parties make the Westside Ironworks location a versatile stop on Howell Mill Road.
