The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Village Staple with Serious Credentials

Mason Bar and Kitchen sits at the corner of Branch and Mason Streets in the Village of Arroyo Grande, and it has earned its place there many times over. Wine Spectator has recognized the restaurant with its Award of Excellence seven years running — a consistent nod to a wine list that includes 16 local pours by the glass, an extensive bottle selection, and a dedicated Saxum cellar program. Locally, it has been voted Best South County Bar ten years in a row. Those aren't numbers a place accumulates by accident.

The Food: Farm-First, Seriously Sourced

The kitchen's commitment is explicit: non-GMO, antibiotic-free, responsibly harvested, sustainable local organic produce and proteins, sourced from farms across San Luis Obispo County. That philosophy shows up clearly on the menu. The seafood side of things runs from panko-crusted crab cakes with black Tobiko caviar and creole remoulade, to seared jumbo scallops over parsnip purée with port reduction, to wild crispy-skin king salmon on creamy pesto risotto with Meyer lemon beurre blanc. Lobster corn dogs — cold water tail meat in carnival batter — have become something of a signature starter.

The steakhouse side is equally considered. Snake River Farms American wagyu appears across multiple cuts: a flat iron steak frites, an espresso-crusted 14 oz. New York strip with blue cheese crumble and dry stout gravy, and a 14 oz. boneless ribeye finished with savory compound butter. Diners can add seared jumbo scallops or tiger prawns to any steak, bridging the seafood and steakhouse halves of the menu with ease.

Beyond the proteins, the kitchen turns out a Mason Carbonara (linguine, pork belly, duck yolk, truffle oil) that guests return for specifically, and a 10 oz. port wine-braised beef short rib that draws repeat visits of its own. Salads lean on local sourcing — the 5 Farms Market Salad with fried fennel chips and manchego is a good example of the kitchen's attention to detail even in lighter courses.

The Bar: More Than a Whiskey Lounge

The bar program is where Mason genuinely distinguishes itself on the Central Coast. Over 25 bourbons and whiskeys anchor the spirits list — the largest selection on the Central Coast by their own account — but the cocktail menu extends well beyond. House-made syrups and fresh-pressed juices from local farms go into every drink. The Black Eagle, built around an Eagle Rare "Mason Bar and Kitchen – Sazerac Barrel Select" bourbon, signals the level of curation at work. The barrel-aged cocktail program takes things further: pre-mixed cocktails aged in oak barrels, available for individual order or through a Barrel Club membership, where guests have a 2–5 liter barrel filled with a customized cocktail and reserved under their name for future visits.

Twenty rotating tap handles cover beer, and the wine list that earned repeated Wine Spectator recognition rounds out a program that genuinely covers every preference.

The Room

The dining room was built with refurbished wood and mason jar light sconces and chandeliers — a country-chic aesthetic that feels deliberate rather than decorative. It reads warm and informal enough for families at lunch, and settled enough for a proper dinner. Outdoor seating, a lounge area, and private banquet space make it flexible for most occasions.
