The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

An Ann Arbor Institution, Eight Decades in the Making

The story of Weber's begins in 1937, when Herman Weber — a 23-year-old farmer from Chelsea, Michigan — traded a planned car purchase for the chance to run a small grill called the High Speed Inn. His first taste of the restaurant business had come earlier, washing dishes at a downtown Ann Arbor eatery after delivering chickens there by streetcar. That modest start eventually led to the Jackson Road address where Weber's stands today, and the family has never left.

Now led by Ken Weber as president, with sons Brian and Michael Weber involved in daily operations, the business remains proudly independent. As Michael puts it: "We don't have a corporate vice president in some office halfway across the country. We're here every day." That hands-on philosophy has shaped everything from the dining room décor — a striking A-frame space with stained glass windows and a baby grand piano — to the menu decisions that keep beloved recipes alive even when they rotate off the printed card.

The Food: Timeless American Steakhouse, Done with Conviction

Weber's is, at its core, a classic American steakhouse, and the prime rib is the undisputed anchor. It has been on the menu since the 1950s, and Executive Chef Jeremy Caroen's kitchen goes through roughly 60,000 pounds of it a year. Live Maine lobster and house-made desserts round out a menu that changes with specials while protecting its most loyal dishes. One example: the Coconut Snowball — vanilla ice cream, toasted coconut, hot fudge, whipped cream, and a cherry — dates to the 1960s and, though it no longer appears on the printed menu, is still made on request for anyone who asks.

Guest reviews reflect the consistency. "You would think it would be really difficult to deliver hot prime rib, cooked perfectly, a fresh tasty salad, hot sides, and even the bread basket, but it all came perfectly executed, delicious, and beautiful," wrote one diner on Google.

A Wine Program Worth Noting

Weber's has held Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence continuously — a recognition the publication has granted since 1981 to restaurants demonstrating genuine commitment to wine curation, proper storage, and food pairing. The restaurant's list draws from Napa Valley, Sonoma, Burgundy, Tuscany, and other internationally recognized regions. A 16-bottle Enomatic dispensing system keeps a rotating selection of premium wines by the glass at optimal freshness — a detail that matters when you're pairing with slow-roasted prime rib or fresh lobster.

Beyond the Dining Room

The Habitat Bar, adjacent to the main restaurant, offers small plates, classic cocktails, and live music on Friday and Saturday nights. An outdoor terrace — open spring through fall, with seating for 50 and a southern exposure — provides a quieter setting for late-evening drinks. The Bakeshop handles house-made desserts and custom cakes, while The Breakfast Bar opens the day.

For regulars like Hans and Marianne Rauer, who have been dining at Weber's since their 1960 wedding reception there, the draw is simple: "It's like you visit family. You know every corner of the place." That kind of loyalty, across generations, is what defines this Ann Arbor steakhouse more than any single dish or accolade.
