Blue Heron Restaurant

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Pioneer Valley Institution, Rooted in Place

Blue Heron Restaurant sits in the heart of Massachusetts' Connecticut River Valley, surrounded by some of the best farmland in the state. The setting is the Old Town Hall of Sunderland, a building erected in 1867 that once housed the town offices and a grammar school. In 2004, founders Deborah Snow and Barbara White assembled a local team to transform the deteriorating structure into a well-appointed fine dining room — complete with the original pressed tin walls and ceilings of the Great Room still intact on the second floor. It is a space that carries genuine history without trading on nostalgia.

The Story Behind the Kitchen

The Blue Heron first opened in 1997 on the banks of the Sawmill River in Montague, quickly earning a reputation as one of the best restaurants in the Pioneer Valley. When Deborah and Barbara retired in July 2022, they passed the restaurant to co-owners Justin Mosher and Nick Ruggiano — two chefs who had met as teenagers in a Northampton kitchen and spent decades working together under award-winning chefs across the country.

Executive Chef Justin Mosher is a Pioneer Valley native who has cooked alongside Julia Child and prepared a surprise meal for a sitting U.S. President. CEO and co-owner Nick Ruggiano graduated at the top of his class from Le Cordon Bleu and cooked for the Samsung group during the 2002 Winter Olympics before returning east. Together they bring over 50 combined years in the industry to a restaurant they have long considered part of their future.

Globally Inspired, Locally Grounded

The menu is described as "globally inspired New American cuisine," and the plates bear that out. The Connecticut River Valley's abundance of small family farms allows the kitchen to source seasonal, regionally grown products — pasture-raised, grass-fed meats raised without hormones or antibiotics, and organic produce wherever possible. When a menu item cannot be sourced locally, the team turns to farms and ranches committed to sustainable practices.

On any given evening, that philosophy translates into dishes like Pan Seared Sea Scallops with Lentils du Puy and Apple Cider Reduction, Duck Two Ways with crispy skin breast and a potato hash of confit leg, or a Coffee & Cocoa Dry-Rubbed Wagyu Beef with Honey Chili Butter and Fava Bean Succotash. A Braised Rabbit arrives with housemade pappardelle, rendered pancetta, and spring peas — a dish that reflects the kitchen's French technique applied to American ingredients. Vegetable-forward options like Palak Curry with housemade paneer or a Spring Pea Risotto with preserved lemon show the same care and global reach.

The wine program has earned the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence repeatedly over the years, a recognition that speaks to the depth and curation of the list. The restaurant has also been a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Restaurateur and has received consistent recognition from regional readers and press for nearly three decades.

The Room and the Experience

Blue Heron is intimate and relaxed — upscale without formality. The warm surrounds of the restored town hall give dinner here a particular character: a sense of occasion without stiffness. All food is prepared from scratch, allowing the kitchen to accommodate most dietary restrictions and food allergies. The menu is clearly marked for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free options throughout.

For those who want to bring the Blue Heron experience beyond the dining room, the restaurant also offers catering, takeout, and private gatherings — continuing a tradition of hospitality that has defined this corner of western Massachusetts for nearly thirty years.
