The story

The Pierhouse Seafood Restaurant in Oban delivers coastal Scottish cuisine

The kitchen and its origins

The Pierhouse Seafood Restaurant in Oban builds its Scottish seafood menus around produce pulled from the surrounding lochs. Chef Michael Leathley grew up near Newcastle watching his grandfather fish and smoke eels on an allotment. That childhood memory shaped an unpretentious approach that blends classic technique with modern comfort. He left formal art studies to enter professional kitchens in the late nineties, eventually settling in Argyll where he describes the local larder as being right on his doorstep. His menu respects traditional formats while adding quiet twists that let clean flavours take centre stage.

Shellfish and the local larder

Langoustines and mussels are pulled daily from Loch Linnhe and Loch Etive, while hand picked oysters arrive from beds just ten minutes away along the coast. The kitchen cures its own fish and meat on site, reduces waste through careful butchery, and prepares preserves alongside house baked pastries. This commitment to coastal cooking keeps the supply chain short and the quality remarkably consistent across lunch and dinner service. Guests who order a platter receive a selection drawn directly from those nearby waters.

The dining rooms and setting

The property began as a nineteenth century pier master residence before the steamboat trade faded. A purpose built hotel wing arrived in nineteen ninety two, followed by a restaurant extension in ninety seven and the creation of the Lismore dining room a decade later. Large windows frame the water, the island of Mull and the Ardnamurchan peninsula while keeping the interior bright and unhurried. AA judges awarded the kitchen two rosettes for culinary excellence, recognising the steady standard maintained since those early expansions.

'The view from the Pierhouse Hotel on the shores of Loch Linnhe is utterly timeless: the water, the mountains of Morven and the little pier where the ferry takes foot passengers to the tiny island of Lismore. Sister to the Three Chimneys at Colbost, the restaurant has a menu dominated by locally landed seafood.' T Jill
