The story
In 2013, a dilapidated country pub on Lambourn Road outside Newbury was transformed into something quite different: a contemporary restaurant and cocktail bar with a clear sense of purpose. The Woodspeen was designed with a picture window to make the most of the views over the West Berkshire countryside, and an open kitchen where guests can watch the chefs at work. The result is a room that feels elegant and unhurried — equally at home for a business lunch or a long Saturday dinner.
The vision has remained consistent since the beginning: exceptional seasonal dishes, the best ingredients the season offers, warm and attentive service, and a wine list chosen with genuine care. That wine list has earned recognition from both AA Hotel and Hospitality Services and Wine Spectator, whose Best of Award of Excellence places The Woodspeen among a select group of restaurants globally for the quality and depth of its cellar.
The kitchen's approach is grounded in garden-to-table British cuisine — a phrase that carries real weight here, given the restaurant's own vegetable garden just steps away. The cooking has earned three AA rosettes for culinary excellence and a place on the Michelin Guide, cited for its kitchen garden and contemporary flavours. Menus shift with the seasons across à la carte, set menu, Sunday roast, and vegan options, alongside a destination cocktail bar that draws guests who aren't necessarily staying for dinner.
The chef's table experience, held in the cookery school kitchen for groups of 8 to 14, offers something more intimate: a world-class chef cooking just a few feet from the table, talking through ingredients, provenance and technique while the meal unfolds. Guests can even leave with handmade chocolates or bottles of Woodspeen olive oil and gin.
Within a short walk of the restaurant sits a state-of-the-art cookery school, housed in a beautifully converted barn overlooking the kitchen garden. The programme spans everything from beginner seafood classes — filleting flat and round fish, smoked mackerel pâté, lemon sole meunière — to French kitchen classics like coq au vin and tarte tatin, parent-and-child courses during school holidays, and corporate team-building days led by the restaurant's own senior chefs. It is an extension of the same European and British cooking philosophy that drives the restaurant: skill-building through real ingredients, real techniques, and food you actually want to eat.
The Woodspeen sits just off junction 13 of the M4, easily reached from Reading, Oxford, Hungerford and Basingstoke — accessible enough to draw from a wide radius, distinctive enough to be worth the drive.
