The story

The Spärrows Manchester: Modern European Comfort Food with a Bib Gourmand

The Spärrows: A Taste of Central European Hospitality in Manchester

Tucked away on Red Bank in Manchester’s Green Quarter, The Spärrows has quietly become a local institution. What began as an unintentional journey seven years ago has blossomed into a beloved spot for modern European comfort food, earning a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the fourth consecutive year in 2026—a testament to its commitment to inclusive, affordable, and delicious dining.

The restaurant’s name is a playful translation of ‘spätzle’, the Central European egg noodles that form the heart of the menu. Expect dishes inspired by all things dough-based: continental pasta, dumplings, and the namesake noodles themselves, all treated with the warmth and appreciation they deserve. The cooking is grounded, generous, and precise—comfort food of the highest calibre, as noted by critic Tom Parker Bowles.

The atmosphere is one of a cosy hideaway, a place where the team’s genuine care for guests is palpable. The Spärrows’ recognition extends beyond Michelin; it has been named one of the Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Local Restaurants and was awarded North West Best Local Restaurant 2023. The restaurant’s modern cuisine reflects a deep connection to Central European artisan makers, offering a dining experience that feels both personal and celebratory.

Whether for a quick lunch, a long dinner, or a special occasion, The Spärrows has woven itself into the fabric of its community. It’s a place to seek comfort, and to return to time and again.

If it seems a stretch from the rarefied peaks of central Europe to Manchester's Green Quarter, be assured that the spätzle, dumplings and filled pasta parcels served at this ‘unique Mancunian concept’ have survived the journey intact. Not the least reason the Spärrows has been such a firm local favourite is that there is so much going on here, from winemakers' lunches to sake tastings. It's in those perfectly rendered little parcels of happiness, though, that the culinary energy is focused. Spätzle or gnocchi come with a range of sauce options, before the menu heads east for pierogi and pelmeni, with lashings of sour cream and garlic breadcrumbs to complement their richly meaty fillings. Sharing boards of cured meats, smoked fish or cheeses will hone the fastest-finger-first skills of a hungry bunch, and if a winter warmer is required, look to the Tyrolese goulash with knöpfle and pickles. To finish, the banker has to be the cinnamon spätzle in a cloud of brown sugar. Revelatory Alpine wines are on hand to suit the mood.
