The story
Citadel's own motto — "the art of eating" — sets the tone for what awaits on the third floor of the Gastro Boutique Hotel on Hrabovsky Street. The restaurant, formerly known as Harmata, offers one of the finest panoramas over historic Lviv, a backdrop that frames every meal with something the kitchen alone could never provide.
At the centre of the kitchen is chef Yevhenii Sushko, whose approach is clear and consistent: source from local Ukrainian farmers, apply contemporary technique, and never let that technique obscure the honest flavour of the ingredient. The team describes it as constant experimentation in search of balance — between the unfamiliar and the instinctively right. Sushko contributed recipes representing the Lviv region to the collective cookbook Flavors of Ukraine, a project that gathered Ukrainian chefs to adapt authentic regional recipes for modern tables.
That same philosophy extends to the restaurant's programme of gastro evenings, wine tastings, and guest appearances by leading chefs from Ukraine and Europe, as well as winemakers and other producers. These events make Citadel something more than a place to dine — they make it a platform for the broader European culinary conversation happening in Lviv right now.
Wine Spectator's Best of Award of Excellence, earned in 2022, speaks to the seriousness of Citadel's wine programme. The hotel maintains a dedicated wine cellar alongside its restaurant, lobby lounge, and summer terrace — a range of spaces that allows the wine list to be enjoyed in more than one register, from a formal dinner to a relaxed afternoon sitting.
Beyond the main dining room, the property includes a lobby lounge, a VIP room, a hookah bar, and an outdoor summer terrace — each suited to a different mood. The Afternoon Tea service, a three-tiered arrangement of savoury and sweet paired with specifically chosen teas, has become a quieter fixture on the programme, designed equally for a solo hour and a gentle celebration.
For larger occasions, the team organises private events with a dedicated menu from Sushko and wine pairings overseen by the house sommelier — weddings, birthdays, corporate gatherings, and bespoke gastro evenings among them. The European cuisine here adapts to the occasion without losing its grounding in what grows and is made in Ukraine.
