The story
Vero Vero describes itself simply as "a little South Italy on Podil," and the restaurant earns that claim through both its kitchen and its cellar. Situated on Illinska Street in one of Kyiv's most atmospheric historic neighborhoods, it operates under the concept of Cucina del Sud — the cuisine of Italy's southern regions. Apulia, Campania, Molise, Calabria, Sardinia, Sicily, and Capri all inform the menu, from traditional preparations to dishes that carry the chef's own signature.
The menu moves between Italian classics and house originals. Spaghetti with vongole, Apulian orecchiette, and Capri ravioli anchor the southern Italian side, while the restaurant's own Vero Vero pasta, prawn Panzanella, and a dedicated gelato collection give regulars something to return for. Salted cheesecakes with salmon have become a breakfast fixture that, by the restaurant's own account, have started many successful mornings in Podil. Seafood from the South Seas rounds out a menu that stays true to the coastal energy of the regions it draws from.
Wine is taken seriously here. The restaurant holds a Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence — recognition it has received every year — and the sommelier selects a monthly pairing to match the current menu. The collection counts more than 40 types of Chianti alone, ranging from Chianti Classico to the more elevated Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. For a restaurant built around southern Italian cuisine, the depth of this list is a genuine point of distinction.
In warmer months, Vero Vero's terrace opens onto a city fountain, and the space hosts open-air symphony concerts and silent film screenings. When the weather turns, guests move inside for evenings accompanied by live music. The restaurant also accommodates private events — partner dinners, family celebrations, and weddings — with the same Italian cuisine and attentive service that keep regulars coming back for life's bigger moments.
