La Tartaruga Restaurant

Tobago's top Italian restaurant, run by Gabriele & Francesca, with homemade pasta, fresh seafood, a Wine Spectator-awarded cellar of 200+ Italian labels.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Italy in the Caribbean, Named for a Sea Turtle

La Tartaruga takes its name from the giant leatherback turtles that nest on the shores near Buccoo — a fitting symbol for a restaurant that has quietly become Tobago's most distinctive dining address. The Italian owners, Gabriele and his daughter Francesca, run the place with the kind of hands-on enthusiasm that makes the difference between a meal and a memory. Guests can choose between al fresco dining on the covered terrace or a seat under the cupola of the teak-floor dining room, with views of the garden and, further out, the waters of Buccoo Beach.

What Arrives at the Table

The kitchen is built on a straightforward principle: quality ingredients, honestly treated. Homemade pasta is the backbone of the dinner menu, joined by fresh fish, rock lobsters, in-house desserts and gelato. Herbs are grown on site, focaccia is baked daily, and aged Parmigiano Reggiano, extra vergine olive oil and olives are imported directly from Italy — while fresh local produce comes from the best suppliers on the island.

The vegetarian menu is a full offering in its own right. Chef Gabriele has developed dishes such as Torta Salata — a flaky filo crust filled with sautéed spinach, caramelized onions and pumpkin, served on Arrabiata sauce with pesto — and Pasta alla Norma, the Sicilian classic of penne, grilled eggplant, tomato and fresh basil, finished with Parmigiano. A creamy Polenta Corleone, layered with pan-roasted eggplant, tomato, parmesan and mozzarella, rounds out the Italian cuisine's vegetable-forward side.

A Wine List That Speaks for Itself

Since 2002, La Tartaruga has held the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence every single year — a streak that reflects genuine commitment rather than a one-time effort. The wine list runs to more than 200 Italian selections, with particular depth in Piedmont, Tuscany, Umbria, Puglia and Sicily. Bottles from the cellar are also available through the on-site wine shop, and Gabriele — who is both chef and sommelier — leads private wine-tasting sessions pairing carefully chosen Italian wines with small bites.

Beyond the Plate

The restaurant occupies a building with more than one story to tell. A museum upstairs, maintained by the Tobago Heritage Conservation Society under Gabriele's direction, holds photographs, antique maps, research notes and artefacts tracing Buccoo's colonial and pre-Columbian past. Pasta-making classes guided by Gabriele, estate tours of nearby sugar mill ruins, and catering for events round out what La Tartaruga offers — making it a place where authentic Italian cuisine and genuine engagement with Tobago's own history sit comfortably side by side.
