The story
Sitting on the second floor of the InterContinental Kaohsiung, ZhanLu brings together authentic Cantonese cooking and fusion Shanghai classics under one elegantly appointed roof. The restaurant draws from both traditions with confidence — offering à la carte and set menus at lunch and dinner, alongside a wine list substantial enough to earn Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence in 2025, a recognition that speaks directly to the depth and curation of the cellar.
The Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator is not incidental here — ZhanLu pairs its Cantonese dishes with an extensive wine selection as well as Taiwanese Kinmen sorghum liquor, Chinese spirits, whiskey, and beer. For guests who bring their own bottle, a corkage policy is in place, reflecting the restaurant's openness to serious wine drinkers who want to match their own selections to the menu.
The dish that defines ZhanLu is its signature roasted duck — sourced from Pingtung's fresh cherry ducks, marinated for two days in a house recipe, pumped with air, glazed with pure malt sugar, air-dried for twelve hours, and then refrigerated for four more before going into a Cantonese-style hanging roasting oven over a slow flame. The result is a crackling skin served alongside an elegantly fragrant osmanthus dipping sauce. Because the preparation spans multiple days, advance booking is required at least two days ahead, and daily quantities are strictly limited.
Beyond the main dining room, ZhanLu offers private room options with their own minimum spend arrangements — well suited for business lunches, celebrations, or gatherings where discretion and dedicated service matter. The business lunch menu and seasonal menus round out an offering that makes the restaurant as practical for a midday meal as it is for a formal dinner over Cantonese cuisine.
