The story
Osteria San Gallo sets out with a clear intention: to move Italian cooking in St. Gallen beyond the clichés of the 1980s, while keeping faith with the original recipes of the mamme and nonne. The restaurant's own philosophy puts it plainly — saisonal, regional, frisch – italianità vera — and that commitment to seasonal, fresh, genuinely Italian food is what distinguishes it on Schwertgasse, right in the old town.
The Gambero Rosso guide, Italy's most authoritative wine and food reference, selected Osteria San Gallo for its Top Italian Restaurants International 2026 list, awarding two forks — a recognition the team received with visible pride. The Michelin Guide has also recommended the restaurant, and the Falstaff Guide rated it 88 points in 2026, placing it firmly among the region's most consistent Italian tables.
The restaurant runs on two central figures. Giuseppe, l'oste, is a passionate host and a wine academy candidate — a combination that shapes the thoughtful wine list. Luciano di Guida, lo chef, trained as sous-chef at the Michelin-starred restaurant Segreto before joining the Osteria. He is, in the team's own words, "an artist in his own way, always searching for new ingredients and the perfect dish." Around them, a tight squadra — Benito, Agatino, Yulia, Valentina, Dominik, and Mamma Bruna — delivers the warmth and consistency that guides and guests alike have noticed.
The kitchen cooks everything fresh to order, which means the menu changes with the seasons and, during busy periods, patience is rewarded. The evening menu is the main event, but the taglieri — daily-prepared boards using carefully sourced, sustainable products — are a fixture. At lunch, the full evening menu is also available, making Osteria San Gallo a serious option for a business lunch or a longer midday meal.
The atmosphere the restaurant describes is straightforward and appealing: a place to meet, talk, eat, drink, and above all be happy. Salute e buon appetito.
