Värdshuset Lindgården

A celebrated Swedish inn in Visby's medieval heart, where Gotlandic flavours, a world-class gin bar and an intact 1960s atmosphere make every visit memorable.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Gotlandic Inn with Character to Spare

Värdshuset Lindgården occupies a distinctive place on Strandgatan in Visby, the medieval walled city on the island of Gotland. Run by Frida, Sonny and Fredrik together with their team, it is the kind of place that earns warmth through specificity rather than spectacle. The dining room retains its largely intact 1960s environment – and somewhere on that wall hangs a black-and-white photograph of Joe Strummer, frontman of The Clash, taken around 1980. As White Guide observed when awarding Lindgården its recognition, the fact that a forty-year-old picture feels modern and surprising tells you everything about the atmosphere here. That is, they note, exactly how it should be.

Swedish Cooking Rooted in Gotland

The kitchen delivers what the restaurant calls "an acknowledged Gotlandic cuisine" – Swedish cooking with a strong regional identity and a first-class wine list to match. In summer, guests eat outdoors beneath walnut and mulberry trees whenever the weather permits. Come autumn, winter and spring, the beautiful classic dining rooms indoors take over. Seasonal events deepen the connection to the island: a harvest week menu celebrates the best Gotlandic produce, and a truffle month pairs dedicated menus with overnight stays at the adjoining hotel. These are not generic promotions but a genuine expression of how the kitchen works – following what the island offers, season by season.

Gingården and Beyond

Alongside the restaurant, Lindgården houses Gingården – a gin bar serving Gin & Tonics from producers around the world, with a particular focus on Swedish gins. The Gin Room upstairs and the outdoor bar below give guests an entirely separate reason to linger. The property also offers hotel accommodation, private dining rooms, event spaces and the full range of facilities you would expect from a serious Swedish inn.

Lindgården 2.0

In early 2026, the kitchen closed for a full renovation – a project the team has been documenting openly, describing it simply as "Lindgården 2.0." The plan is to reopen in the park in June 2026. The honesty of that process – sharing progress photos, acknowledging the wait – fits the character of a place that has never needed to oversell itself.

There is one thing that breaks the pattern in the otherwise intact 1960s environment. On a wall in the dining room hangs a black‑and‑white photo of Joe Strummer, frontman of The Clash. The photo was taken somewhere around 1980. That says a lot about the atmosphere at Lindgården when a 40‑year‑old picture feels modern and surprising. And that is exactly how it should be.
