The story
Slottsholmen sits right at the water's edge in Västervik, where boat berths line the dock and floating hotel rooms bob just beyond the dining room windows. The place was conceived by ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus, and the restaurant reflects his sensibility: airy, well-designed, generous in spirit. White Guide recognised it at Fine level in 2026, noting that the setting alone creates an optimal frame — but that the kitchen more than holds its own within it.
The cooking moves between the global and the deeply personal. Dishes are shaped by Björn's childhood memories, so familiar Swedish flavours sit alongside more contemporary ideas. Steak tartare finds balance with sweet cubes of ginger. Venison fillet with rosemary carries the warmth of a family dinner. The meal closes with a richly creamy chocolate cake paired with a bright yoghurt ice cream with vanilla. Nothing overreaches; everything is well-executed, with what White Guide describes as a "home-familiar vibe, delivered with restaurant precision."
From the open kitchen, the occasional flare of a flambéed entrecôte punctuates the calm hum of the room — a small theatre that fits the space without forcing it.
The restaurant serves hotel breakfast, lunch and dinner, with views across the Västervik archipelago throughout. Local produce anchors the Swedish menu, and the kitchen is dog-friendly — a detail that says something about the tone of the place. Children have their own menu and drawing books; this is somewhere the whole table is genuinely considered.
The wine list is substantial. The service team, described by White Guide as well-informed and generously attentive, will guide guests through it — and will happily walk you over to the dry-ageing cabinet to show the evening's cuts. The bar covers the full range of cocktails, with proper attention to glassware and garnish.
Slottsholmen is a full destination: hotel suites, a spa in a 1910 Jugendstil building nearby, conference facilities, and event spaces for weddings and celebrations. The restaurant is the heart of it — the place where the archipelago light, the well-sourced Swedish cooking, and Björn Ulvaeus's eye for a room come together most completely.
