A Place That Defies Easy Categories

Tucked behind Skrapan — Västerås's most recognizable skyscraper — on Karlsgatan 4, Vinoteket occupies a building with history to spare. The Officershuset was built in 1904 to house officers from Västmanlands Regiment, and by 1905 it already held a restaurant complete with a coin-operated food automat. That concept didn't last. What's here today does something far more enduring: it creates a room where people genuinely want to stay.

The team behind Vinoteket describe it not as a restaurant but as "a reflection of our own personality" — somewhere simpler and freer, built around good wine, flavourful food, and the kind of conversation that runs long. White Guide awarded the place its Fine level recognition in 2026, and the description in that citation captures it well: a space that draws in every type of guest, from colleagues filling the room with laughter to couples settling into the sofas on the half-landing above.

The Food

The menu speaks one clear language: food should taste good. That means excellent charcuterie, Spanish and Portuguese conservas, quality cheeses, and tapas-style small plates designed to be shared — alongside the pizzas the place has become known for. The style is Mediterranean-leaning, unfussy, and built around sharing over a bottle rather than formal plating. Champagne, Prosecco, Cava, whites from Marlborough to Vouvray to Piemonte, reds from Rioja, Valpolicella, Burgundy and beyond: the range is genuinely wide, and the sommeliers wear it lightly. Don't be surprised if one pulls up a chair at your table uninvited — they've almost certainly found something that will suit you perfectly. Wine quizzes, tasting flights, and occasional winemaker evenings round out the offer for those who want to go deeper.
