Celebrated table

Pråmen

A former sand barge on Västerås waterfront, Pråmen serves classic Swedish cuisine in a calm, beautifully set dining room with unbeatable lake views.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Restaurant Afloat

Pråmen sits at Färjkajen in Västerås, moored along the barge quay on the edge of the lake. The setting is genuinely unusual: you board via a passageway onto what was once a sand barge, and the open kitchen greets you almost immediately. Wood and brass define the interior — a rare, unhurried combination that feels classic without being stiff. Nearly every table is a window table, laid with linen and silver, and when the sun drops toward the water at dusk, the view is hard to rival anywhere in the city.

Swedish Cooking, Honestly Done

The kitchen works with fresh, seasonal ingredients tied to a set menu, a commitment that shapes everything from sourcing to the pace of service. The White Guide, which awarded Pråmen its Very Fine Level recognition for 2026, captured the experience well: a small cup of celery root broth — described as "endlessly deep," finished with a forest-scented oil — arriving to warm guests who had walked along the quay in the lake breeze. It is the kind of detail that defines considered Swedish cuisine: simple in appearance, precise in execution, immediately comforting.

The menu-led approach means the kitchen asks for advance notice on dietary requirements — at least 48 hours — so that special needs can be handled with the same care as everything else, rather than as an afterthought.

For Larger Occasions

Beyond regular dinner service, Pråmen accommodates groups of twenty or more, making it a natural choice for weddings, corporate events, or gatherings that call for something more than a standard restaurant booking. Outdoor seating is available in the warmer months through the summer outpost, Magasinet, on the quay just outside — the same waterfront, a different season.

The combination of a distinctive location, a calm and carefully maintained dining room, and cooking that earns serious critical attention makes Pråmen one of the more compelling places to eat in Västerås.

White Guide — Very fine level

After having been inspected via the passageway on the former sand barge, we are warmly welcomed by the cooks in the open kitchen. The décor is in wood and brass, a rare calm and classic dining‑room setting. Here there are almost only window tables, beautifully set with linen and silver – and the view over the lake at sunset is unbeatable. We have walked along the delicious residential area by the barge quay and are a little chilled by the lake breeze. The appetite is quickly satisfied. A small cup of endlessly deep celery root broth with forest‑scented oil warms from the heart outward.
