John's Place

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A place by the sea

John's Place sits so close to the water on the Varberg coast that, as the White Guide puts it, inside and outside seem to merge into one. The panoramic sea view is immediate the moment you step through the door — and before you even reach your table, dry-aged cuts resting decoratively in the cold display case signal exactly what this restaurant is about.

The welcome here is genuine. Dorthe and her team set the tone from the first smile at the threshold, and that warmth carries through the entire evening.

The charcoal grill at the heart of it

The charcoal grill is the beating heart of John's Place. The menu leans confidently into quality meat — dry-aged cuts, pluma, entrecôte, and more unusual options such as kangaroo — all prepared over live fire. The kitchen's commitment to sourcing shows in the hanging cuts on display, a quiet statement of intent before the meal begins.

Starters balance the richness of the grill: a plate of burrata with fresh raspberries and pistachios delivers what the White Guide called "a fresh flavour explosion — creamy, sweet and tart." The wine programme is taken seriously, with dedicated wine-pairing evenings and tapas sessions among the regular offerings. A "Butcher Bag" take-away option extends the experience beyond the dining room.

Every table, the restaurant notes, has a wonderful view — though the window seats closest to the waves are understandably in demand.

Recognised for good reason

John's Place earned a White Guide recommendation in 2026, praised for its sea-splashed playfulness and the way the guest and the grill share centre stage. The guide is candid that vegetarian options are more limited — the kitchen's passion is clearly fire and meat — but for those who want well-executed grilled food with the glitter of the sea as backdrop, few places on the Swedish west coast match it. The restaurant itself notes that summer is when the experience peaks, with sittings running every day during the high season.
