Joels Brygga

A fish and shellfish restaurant on a historic harbour pier in Träslövsläge, Varberg – local catch, own smokehouse, and a White Guide recommendation.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Pier, a Smokehouse, and the West Coast at Your Feet

Walk past the rows of red fishing sheds, the resting boats, and the stacked lobster traps, and you arrive at Joels Brygga – a fish and shellfish restaurant sitting directly on the old harbour pier at Träslövsläge, just outside Varberg. The setting is as straightforward as it is striking: open water on all sides, sail canvases overhead, and a spacious dining room that fills with families and summer visitors when the season peaks. The White Guide has recognised the restaurant for exactly this combination of place, produce, and honest cooking.

Joel, Stina & Jessica

The restaurant was born from a chance encounter at Varbergs torg. Joel Kaspersson – who had previously run kitchens across five restaurants and two cafes simultaneously in Funäsfjällen – crossed paths with Stina Ekman, who had spent years running her own restaurant out at Getterön. Jessica Persson, experienced in operations and staff management, completed the trio. When Stina heard that the old Hamnbryggan was for sale, the three moved quickly. Their complementary backgrounds – a head chef, a seasoned restaurateur, and an operations specialist – are what keep the place running with both ambition and warmth.

Local Sourcing as a Guiding Principle

Regionality and seasonality are not talking points here – they shape every menu. Fish and shellfish come through a close collaboration with Björkäng Fish, sourced according to season and availability. Oysters arrive from Ulrika in Havstensund, where the only commercial oyster cultivation in Scandinavia operates. Swedish mussels come from Mollösund. Seaweed is harvested locally by Louice and Eva-Maria, Varberg's own seaweed divers, and supplemented by Ten Island Sea Farm outside Öckerö. Lamb comes from an organic, KRAV-certified farm in Veddige. Chicken from Alexandra in Valinge. Herbs and vegetables from Raimo in Torpa. The kitchen also runs its own smokehouse on site – smoked mackerel features on the Christmas table menu, and the smokehouse menu stands as a category of its own.

What's on the Plate

The menu reflects Halland, the West Coast, and the season: oysters, prawns, crayfish, mussels, and a range of fish dishes alongside meat and vegetarian options. One dish that White Guide singled out – crispy-fried strömming (Baltic herring) with browned butter and mashed potato, topped with lemon and freshly caught prawns – captures the spirit of the place in a single plate. The lunch menu rotates daily and runs from pan-fried flatfish with prawns and burnt butter to classic Swedish meatballs that have been on the counter long enough to carry Stina's name.

The Chef's Table

For a more focused experience, the Chef's Table seats up to eight guests at the bar counter from Wednesday to Saturday evenings. The sea-inspired tasting menu is prepared in full view, with drinks packages ranging from a curated champagne-wine-avec combination to an alcohol-free option. It is the same kitchen, the same local ingredients – just closer.
