The story
Aaltos Italian Grill & Garden occupies one of only three buildings in Sweden designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto — the V-Dal student nation on Sysslomansgatan in central Uppsala. Behind the sleek white concrete façade, the interior takes a different turn entirely: flamboyantly playful, an entertaining mix of luxury and kitsch that sets the tone for an evening that takes itself seriously without taking itself too seriously.
The kitchen draws clear inspiration from the bustling Apennine Peninsula, and the White Guide has taken notice, awarding Aaltos its Fine level distinction for 2026. The Italian cooking here is confident and ingredient-led, and pasta is rightly considered one of the house's strong suits. Ravioli filled with Karljohan mushrooms, chanterelles, and spinach, served in a mushroom foam with small pieces of pancetta, is a standout — a dish that layers and highlights mushroom flavour with real skill.
The surprises don't end with the savoury courses. Pasta "pillows" appear at dessert: apple-filled dough knots, fried and brought to the table in a vanilla sauce alongside lemon sorbet. It's the kind of dish that earns a genuine grazie.
The wine program stays loyal to Italy — impressively so, with many of the country's regions represented. The one permitted detour is to France, specifically for champagne. It's a principled, well-considered list that rewards exploration.
The atmosphere at Aaltos is relaxed enough for families and late evenings, with outdoor seating in the garden when Uppsala's summers allow. Whether you come for the architecture, the Italian food, or simply a well-poured glass of something from Piedmont or Sicily, the restaurant delivers on all fronts.
