The story
Tonka Strandgatan grew out of a proven idea. Its sibling, Tonka Bistro Café, opened in one of Umeå's city-centre malls and quickly earned a loyal following as a lunch and brunch destination with a clear, consistent concept. When the time came to expand, the choice of location said everything: a building designed by architect Gert Wingård along the banks of the Ume River, where guests at a window table look straight out over the water.
That setting — light, river, Norrland sky — shapes the atmosphere as much as anything on the plate. The White Guide recognised the restaurant at Fine level for 2026, noting the coherent concept that has defined Tonka since the bistro first opened, now carried forward in a more ambitious dining room.
The kitchen works within Swedish cuisine, moving through the day with purpose. Weekday lunches run from late morning into the early afternoon; Saturday brings a longer brunch service. From Tuesday evening onward, the restaurant shifts into dinner mode, with both an à la carte menu and a five-course option for those who want to settle in properly. There is also an afterwork offer and a catering arm for events.
The menu names — Matsalen (the dining room) and Rus — suggest a kitchen that takes its Swedish cuisine seriously without taking itself too seriously. A five-course format alongside more casual daytime eating covers a wide range of occasions, from a quick riverside lunch to a considered evening meal.
Approaching a decade since the original Tonka Bistro Café opened its doors, the Strandgatan address represents the more polished expression of what the group has been building in Umeå. The architect-designed house, the river views, and the structured evening menus all point in the same direction: Swedish cooking done with care, in a room that earns its place on the waterfront.
