The story
For seven years, Restaurang Apa has been doing one thing exceptionally well: serving carefully made American-style burgers alongside an outstanding selection of craft beer on Storgatan in Sundsvall's Stenstaden district. The formula has proven so compelling that the concept has since expanded to both Hudiksvall and Härnösand — a natural progression for a place that is, by all accounts, consistently packed.
The burgers here are made from scratch, and the details matter. A fan favourite is the "Grande Plate" — a loaded spread featuring all of Apa's house sauces, among them a harissa mayo and a whiskey cheddar, alongside four styles of fries: original, truffle, parmesan, and sweet potato. It is the kind of American comfort food that earns repeat visits.
The drink side is equally considered. A beer wall stocked with at least 50 bottled varieties lines the interior, and a blackboard in the bar highlights rotating selections from local breweries. Apa also runs its own in-house microbrewery, producing two distinct varieties under the APO label — a genuine point of difference in a region with a growing craft beer culture.
In summer, a generous outdoor seating area opens up along Storgatan, making it a natural gathering spot. Come winter, the interior is warm and welcoming, and the staff — notably charming even during the busiest services — keep the energy right. The restaurant is family-friendly, accessible, and open late on weekends, which explains the loyal crowd it draws night after night.
White Guide's recognition in 2026 puts into words what regulars have known for years: this is a place where the food is taken seriously, the beer is chosen with care, and the atmosphere makes you want to stay a little longer.
