The story
Södra Teatern on Mosebacke has housed decadence and devilry since 1859. Sweden's oldest active private theatre is also, perhaps unexpectedly, one of Skanstull's most compelling lunch destinations — a fact that earned it a place in the White Guide's 2026 recommendations.
The draw is a rotating cast of some of Stockholm's most respected chefs, each bringing their own style to the weekday lunch table. As the White Guide put it, the indecisive have good reason to come back every day of the week: Adam and Albin's noodles on Monday, a falafel in the style of Sayan Isaksson on Tuesday, a vegan burger from Taku-Taku on Wednesday, and Malin Söderström's celebrated crispy fish available any day you choose. It is a format that turns a lunch break into something worth planning around.
The food is served on the Mosebacketerrassen, the sun-drenched terrace that opens weekdays from 11:30 and weekends from noon. The setting — high above Södermalm with views across Stockholm — belongs to a building that carries 165 years of Swedish cultural history in its walls. Evert Taube performed here. So did Red Hot Chili Peppers. Scenes from Ingmar Bergman's Oscar-winning Fanny and Alexander were filmed on the Stora Scen stage downstairs.
The kitchen is overseen by Max Andersson as Kitchen Manager, with Anders Backman serving as both General Manager and F&B Manager — a structure that keeps food and hospitality genuinely integrated into the venue's identity rather than treated as an afterthought.
Beyond the weekday Swedish and Asian lunch offer, Södra Teatern functions as a full-evening destination: concerts in the intimate Kägelbanan (capacity 750 standing) or the 418-seat Stora Scen, a nightclub, private event spaces for up to 1,300 guests, and bars throughout. The venue accommodates wheelchair access and is family-friendly during daytime hours. Whether you arrive for crispy fish at noon or a live show after dark, the building itself — part of Stockholm's living cultural fabric since before the city had electric light — does most of the atmosphere work for you.
