Teatergrillen

Open since 1945, Teatergrillen on Nybrogatan is Stockholm's grande dame of fine dining – Swedish classics, French accents, and tableside theatre.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Room That Has Earned Its Place

Teatergrillen opened in 1945 and holds one of the oldest preserved restaurant interiors in Stockholm. The dining room was designed in 1968 by the legendary Yngwe Gamlin, who drew inspiration from the world of theatre to create a space that feels both timeless and quietly theatrical. The bar, added later by designer Jonas Bohlin as a complement to the main room, offers its own distinct character – a place to meet before dinner, linger over lunch, or close the evening with a final glass.

Sitting on Nybrogatan in the Östermalm district, the restaurant functions as a calm remove from the surrounding bustle: an oasis, as the restaurant itself puts it, in otherwise lively city blocks.

The Food and the Show

The kitchen grounds itself in Swedish flavours with French influences, working with carefully selected ingredients of the highest quality. Classic dishes sit alongside more modern creations on the menu, and the cooking is served with a standard of dining-room craft the restaurant describes as "world class."

The White Guide, which awarded Teatergrillen a "very fine level" distinction for 2026, captures something essential about the experience: sparks fly a few metres into the air when the steak Hasse with pepper sauce arrives at the table. Guests jump, then burst into impressed "wows." At Teatergrillen, there has to be a show – and the kitchen delivers one.

Culture on the Walls

Art and culture have always held a central place here. The restaurant's collection has been curated over the years into an eclectic mix of photography, painting and sculpture, with rotating exhibitions from artists including Anneè Olofsson, Tobias Bernstrup and Emily Sundblad – who has cited her own childhood visits to Teatergrillen as part of her connection to the place. A decorative frieze by Lars Aijmer, painted in 1951, forms part of the permanent fabric of the room.

A Living Institution

Saturday lunches are reserved for private parties, making the main dining room available exclusively to larger groups on those days. The bar, by contrast, welcomes walk-ins from Monday through Friday from 11:30 – for a proper after-work drink, a quick coffee, or a lighter meal. One of Stockholm's finest wine cellars runs beneath it all.
