The story
Sankt Eriksplan 1 has been a dining destination for Stockholmers for more than six decades. Since 2016, the name on those large windows has been Portal, and the person behind the stove and the vision is chef and restaurateur Klas Lindberg. The premise is straightforward: uncomplicated food, genuinely good Swedish ingredients, and drinks chosen to lift the whole experience rather than compete with it.
Lindberg grew up in Åseda, a small town outside Växjö in Småland, before working his way through professional kitchens and into the world of culinary competition. That background shows in the cooking — technique is precise and purposeful, deployed to highlight flavour rather than to impress for its own sake. The result is Swedish cuisine that feels both accomplished and entirely approachable.
The menu is divided into starters, mains and desserts, supplemented by a large blackboard behind the bar where daily dishes are chalked up. The White Guide, which has recognised Portal at a very fine level, singles out the "love stew" as Lindberg's signature: vendace roe in a smooth egg cream with Gotland potatoes and onion, stirred together at the table into something the guide describes as "almost obscenely yummy." The cockerel liver terrine from the blackboard and the deboned quail with baked kohlrabi and smoked butter sauce are further examples of a kitchen that can execute with competition-level precision while keeping the result grounded and satisfying. For those who want beef, the house serves dry-aged Swedish fine beef priced by the gram, with the guest choosing the cut size — a straightforward approach that also reflects a genuine commitment to reducing food waste.
Drinks are overseen by Totte Steneby and span a glazed wine cellar stocked with classics from well-known vineyards alongside more modern future classics. The bar also pours quirky Nordic beers and the house makes its own charcuteries — reason enough to settle in at the bar counter before or after dinner.
The space is bright and decorated with quality materials, yet it filled with regulars almost immediately after opening. The White Guide notes that Portal "felt like a classic as soon as it opened" — a rare thing, and a fair description of a restaurant where the atmosphere is warm without being manufactured. Vegetarian and vegan options are always available, and the room accommodates everything from a weekday lunch to a private dinner in the studio spaces.
