The story
Look for the turquoise fence on Odengatan 94 and you've found Minh Mat. The name is a play on words: minh means "my" in Vietnamese, and the restaurant's full motto is Minh Mat är din mat — "my food is your food." It's an unpretentious declaration that sets the tone for everything inside: intimate, colorful, eclectic, with cheerful music, pleasant chatter, and at least one plastic lizard on the wall.
Minh Mat is run by Minh Du Alneng, a prize-winning cookbook author born and raised in central Vietnam, and Victor Alneng, a sommelier whose previous career as a social anthropologist included years of fieldwork in Vietnam. That combination — deep culinary roots and rigorous cultural knowledge — shapes what lands on the table.
The à la carte menu is built to show the real breadth of Vietnamese cuisine, well past the noodle bowls most diners expect. A particular focus falls on the cooking of Vietnam's ethnic minorities — the Thái, Mường, and H'mông peoples of the northwestern region of Tây Bắc — with spices imported directly from minority villages in that area. Exceptional Swedish farm produce, natural wines, and good beer round out the offer. Star Wine List, the global guide to the best wine restaurants, recommends Minh Mat, and the restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide Nordic 2025.
White Guide 2026 rates Minh Mat at a very fine level, singling out its exciting flavors, charismatic charm, and "lots of personality" — a fair summary of a place that takes Vietnamese cuisine seriously without taking itself too seriously. Outdoor seating, takeaway, and a separate collection menu mean there are several ways to enjoy it.
