The story
Seven years in, Lilla Ego still ranks among the most coveted reservations in Stockholm. Tables open one month ahead and disappear fast — the regulars figured that out long ago. The White Guide calls it a modern classic, and it is hard to argue: chefs Räms and Sjöstedt have built something genuinely rare, a neighbourhood room where serious Swedish cooking meets an atmosphere that never takes itself too seriously.
The menu draws from a Nordic ingredient universe and builds dishes with real complexity — multiple textures, layered states, components stacked with a kind of elegant nonchalance. Vendace roe is a long-standing fixture, and the soused herring preparations, one notably made with elder and crisp egg, have earned near-permanent status on the menu. The signature flourish that greets every table is grated butter with sunflower seeds, served alongside sourdough bread that regulars plan their evenings around.
Current dishes on the menu give a clear sense of the range: pilgrims scallop with radishes and Thai basil, flounder with broccoli, shrimp and elderflower, duck with celeriac and Café de Paris butter, and beef with zucchini, tarragon and parmesan cream. The Seaman's duck — a queer, high-conviction dish with potato peelings, foam and an intense jus — is the kind of thing that explains why this place has such a devoted following. Vegetable-forward options sit alongside the meat and fish without feeling like an afterthought.
The space on Västmannagatan is modest in size, warm in feel. Service is prompt, knowledgeable and, as the White Guide notes with affection, frequently tattooed. The wine list matches the ambition of the kitchen: individual selections that reward curiosity. And for what you receive — this level of craft and Nordic cooking — the value is striking, something the guide explicitly credits for the restaurant's enduring success.
Bar seats cannot be booked, which means a spontaneous visit is always possible. That is the open secret Lilla Ego's regulars have kept to themselves.
