Celebrated table

Enkai

Enkai brings Japanese izakaya to Hornstull: steaming ramen at lunch, grilled skewers and cocktails by night in a clean, considered setting.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Japanese izakaya on Södermalm

At Hornsbruksgatan 26, in the Hornstull neighbourhood of Stockholm's Södermalm, Enkai occupies what was once Petters' old tavern and has quietly made it its own. The premise is straightforward: steaming ramen at lunch, and come evening, the grill takes over with classic Japanese skewers, sharing dishes and a bar programme built around focused cocktails and a tightly edited wine list.

Clean lines, considered cooking

The first thing visitors notice is the geometry. A rational, square-shaped design runs through the entire space — the layout of the venue and bar, the tables and booths, the plates and servings. It is an aesthetic that is both deliberate and effective, and it sets the tone for food and service that follow the same logic: no excess, nothing superfluous.

The kitchen leans on chicken and pork, cooked over fire in the Japanese tradition. The most direct way to experience it is the omakase option at the grill — nine courses that hand the decisions to the chef and, at 425 kronor, represent one of the more honest propositions in the city. For anyone who enjoys grilled Asian food beyond the ubiquitous sushi offer, Enkai makes a compelling case.

Recognition for doing something different

White Guide awarded Enkai its Fine level distinction in 2026, singling out the kitchen's efficiency and the refreshing ambition to serve serious Asian food in a cosy, accessible setting. The guide noted the coherence of the experience — from the single-item cocktail menu to the omakase format — as evidence that the restaurant is building something with real intention.

Enkai is open for lunch and dinner throughout the week, with outdoor seating available and the space bookable for private parties.

White Guide — Fine level

Petters' old tavern has been exuding Japanese sensibility for some time now. A rational, square‑shaped design is the first impression that greets visitors and recurs throughout the evening—in the layout of the venue and bar, the tables and booths, as well as the plates and assorted servings. Perhaps the shape reflects a certain concession to wit, but the clean aesthetic is certainly both well‑thought‑out and effective. The kitchen’s operation is efficient too, especially when decisions are left to the grill chef à la omakase, where nine courses cost only 425 kronor. For dinner the kitchen indeed leans heavily on chicken and pork, but anyone who enjoys grilled Japanese fare has absolutely nothing to complain about—and there’s an extra point for the refreshing ambition to serve solid Asian food that isn’t sushi in a cozy setting. For the thirsty, there is not only an extremely focused wine list but also dedicated cocktails and a single‑item menu. An kai simply sets the stage for an all‑evening performance, even if the ensemble may still be staying a bit too comfortably inside the box.
