Café Cuvée

Café Cuvée on Högbergsgatan is Södermalm's neighbourhood bistro: small plates, French wines, oysters, and a White Guide-recognised kitchen.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Your neighbourhood bistro on Södermalm

On a quiet backstreet off Mariatorget, Café Cuvée has made itself at home as what its own team calls "a gastronomic living room" — a place where French and Swedish influences meet, and where the mix of people, food and drink is, as the name suggests, the whole point. Dagens Nyheter summed it up as "a cosy Frenchman you happily return to," while Svenska Dagbladet praised its romantic atmosphere and called it unusually good at being a genuine neighbourhood spot. That reputation has now earned the restaurant recognition at the White Guide's Fine level for 2026.

Small plates, serious wine

The format is built around small plates — two or three dishes make a satisfying meal. The veal tartare has become a fixture on the menu, while tarte flambée and beet-cured salmon are more recent additions. But it's the snacks that draw particular attention: the caviar and the chicken liver mousse are both outstanding according to the White Guide's assessors. A classic pairing to start — two French oysters with a glass of Muscadet — is available at 150 kr, keeping things accessible without sacrificing quality. DI Weekend noted that you can eat very well here even on a tight budget, and separately highlighted frog legs and a legendary wine available by the glass at 400 kr.

A wine list worth exploring

The wine list leans French, with several champagnes available by the glass, but rewards those who look further. Excellent Italian bottles from Piedmont sit among the reds by the glass, and the list also includes carefully chosen German and Austrian selections. Wine is clearly taken seriously here — the restaurant runs regular tasting evenings in its private space Cave Cuvée, where four curated wines are explored around a theme, at prices ranging from around 695 to 895 kr per person.

The room and the vibe

Step inside and the bistro atmosphere is immediate: the dining room is compact and lively, tables close together, noise level honest. The two bar seats offer a quieter perch and a good view of the kitchen — though they can't be reserved. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday from 17:00, and its location makes it a natural choice before or after a show at Rival, Folkoperan, Södra Teatern or Göta Lejon. Dogs are welcome. Large groups can book Cave Cuvée for private dinners of up to 30 seated guests, or up to 50 for a standing event.

White Guide — Fine level

From the slightly anonymous back street you step right into the dining room, which is cramped, cozy, and just as “bistro‑like” as the name suggests. Some say it has a romantic vibe, but turtle doves should note that the noise level can be high and the tables are close together. The two seats by the bar offer a bit more privacy and also a very good view (though those spots can’t be reserved). Start with two French oysters and a glass of Muscadet for a reasonable 150 kr, then move on to the menu, which is built around small plates. Two or three dishes are enough to get you full. The veal tartare has been on the menu for a while, while the tarte flambée—essentially a few slices of mini‑pizza—and the beet‑cured salmon are newer items. Overall, the menu lists simple dishes. And don’t miss the snacks! Both the caviar and the chicken liver mousse are outstanding. The wine list includes several champagnes by the glass. French wines dominate, but a few excellent Italians from Piedmont stand out among the red wines by the glass. Those who look deeper will also find several exciting German and Austrian selections on the list.
