Brasserie Balzac, Stockholm

Celebrated table

Brasserie Balzac

A proper French brasserie on Odengatan since 2016, with classic cooking, world-class cocktails and one of Stockholm's most serious champagne lists.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Paris on Odengatan

Brasserie Balzac takes its name from Honoré de Balzac, the 19th-century French novelist who believed that what we choose to eat says something essential about who we are. That conviction shapes everything here. Opened in 2016 on Odengatan in Stockholm's Vasastan neighbourhood, the restaurant is built around a simple idea: that French food — the mix of rustic countryside cooking and urban abundance — should feel like home rather than performance.

The room delivers on that promise immediately. Red leather sofas, dark wood and the low hum of animated conversation between families, friends and committed francophiles create an atmosphere that sits somewhere between a Parisian brasserie and a very good New York interpretation of one. On warmer days, the pavement terrace fills with guests lingering over an aperitif and a charcuterie board, exactly as they should.

The Food and the Philosophy

The menu moves between the rustic and the refined in the way that defines the best French cooking. The entrecôte arrives with proper grill flavour, and the kitchen handles vegetables with the same conviction — a cauliflower dish charred to a deep, satisfying darkness. A dessert of French toast with sharp, bright apple cuts through richly, in the best possible way. White Guide, which has recognised Brasserie Balzac in its 2026 edition, captures the spirit well: the food is honest, the setting is alive, and the whole experience rewards those who simply want to eat and drink well.

A Wine List Worth the Attention

The drinks programme is where Brasserie Balzac shows particular ambition. The wine list is built around classic French appellations — from a straightforward house carafe to some of the most sought-after bottles in the world — guided by a philosophy the restaurant describes simply as "a vibrant wine list that combines tradition and curiosity." The champagne selection alone runs to around fifty references, including vintages stretching back to 1981. The bar offers both timeless cocktail classics and more playful, inventive pours, and the full menu is available throughout.

For anyone seeking a dependable, convivial French brasserie in Stockholm, Balzac is the real thing.
