Johans Krog

A charming Swedish bistro on Marstrand island, blending French influences with West Coast seafood in an art deco setting steps from the sea.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Bistro Where the West Coast Meets France

Inside one of Marstrand island's grand timber buildings, facing the old town square and its ancient silver poplar, Johans Krog has carved out a character entirely its own. The low ceilings, art deco lamps, chess-board floor and French-leaning interior create an atmosphere that feels genuinely unhurried — the kind of place where a meal stretches naturally into an evening.

The kitchen leans on Swedish seasonal produce with a clear French accent. Fish, shellfish and the catch of the West Coast are the backbone of the menu, which rotates with the seasons. An oyster to start — or perhaps gratinated snails, or a spoonful of prized Swedish caviar — sets the tone for what follows. It is cooking that respects its ingredients without overcomplicating them, and the White Guide has recognised Johans Krog at a very fine level for exactly that kind of honest, well-executed work.

Stellas Oyster Bar and an Island Summer

When the weather cooperates, the terrace and the outdoor veranda on the upper floor come into their own, with views over the square and the sea beyond. Adjacent to the main dining room, Stellas Oyster Bar operates on a drop-in basis, serving French oysters and drinks — a relaxed counterpart to the more structured bistro experience inside.

The summer calendar fills with events: a crayfish party on the terrace with live music, DJ nights running into the early hours on Sundays, and private takeovers that reflect how deeply the restaurant is woven into Marstrand's social fabric. A private room — the Chambre Séparée — seats up to eight guests in full seclusion, suited to smaller dinner parties or business gatherings.

Open from Easter to Christmas

Johans Krog operates seasonally, from Easter through to Christmas, with daily service across July and August. Dogs are welcome, as long as they stay close to their party — a small detail that says something about the tone of the place. This is Swedish hospitality in a setting that has been shaped by the island's long history, without being precious about it.

White Guide — Very fine level
