The story
The building that became Kiviks Hotell started life in 1908 as a private villa called Emiliero, built for a Malmö lawyer on a hillside above the shore at Kivik. Over the following decades it hosted royalty — Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Prince Eugene both stayed here, the latter drawn by the particular quality of light that Österlen is still known for. The Linde family from Lund acquired the property in 2007, completed a full renovation, and reopened it to guests in spring 2008. The 32-room hotel sits on that same elevated plot, with an Italian neo-Renaissance garden stepping down toward the sea.
The bright, distinctly Nordic dining room earns its reputation through the panoramic windows alone — a wide sweep of Baltic that shifts through what the hotel describes as countless shades of blue. A balcony pushes guests a step closer to the ornate garden and the water beyond.
The Swedish kitchen here leans into the produce of Österlen — the region known for its apple orchards, white beaches, and exceptional light — while allowing itself some gastronomic playfulness. White Guide awarded the restaurant its Fine level recognition for 2026, noting a menu with exactly the right number of choices and thoughtful coverage for every guest at the table: with or without alcohol, with or without meat.
Dishes that caught the guide's attention include a beef tartare starter that subverts expectations by being cooked to 64 degrees, then layered with pickled emperor's hat mushroom, mustard mayo, carrot crisps, and a snow of browned butter. A vegetarian counterpart keeps things minimal: smoked Bokeslund tomatoes draped in dill oil. Main courses of flaky cod and cauliflower arrive crowned with edible flowers. The meal closes with a variation on apple — a fitting nod to the surrounding Österlen landscape — that the guide called exquisite.
The hotel operates as a full destination: spa with pool, jacuzzi, dry sauna, and aroma steam room; conference rooms with sea views; an oyster bar serving champagne on the last Friday of each month; and summer grill evenings in the garden. A wine-and-food package pairs an overnight stay with a visit to Nordic Sea Winery in nearby Simrishamn. After dinner, a stroll beneath the hotel's hanging birch trees is, apparently, the recommended way to end the evening.
