The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Sacred Space Reinvented

The building on Hyttgatan in Sandviken first opened its doors in 1905 as a Baptist church. Nearly a century later, in 2014, it found a second life as The Church — a gastropub that has since become one of the most talked-about dining destinations in the region. The soaring ceiling height, an impressive crown molding, and a vivid original organ now share space with a thoroughly modern interior, creating what the White Guide aptly describes as a "wonderfully unique, fun, and quirky mix." It is a setting that feels both storied and alive.

The Room and the Bar

At the heart of the venue stands a large central bar — the natural gathering point for an evening here. Fifteen beers flow from the taps, and the bar team shakes cocktails with evident confidence. The atmosphere manages to be both convivial and relaxed, the kind of place where you settle in rather than pass through. The service strikes a tone that is familiar without being casual, professional without being stiff — guest-focused in the truest sense.

What to Eat

The gastropub menu is deliberately concise: few dishes, each well-chosen. Many guests begin with Kyrktornet, a three-tier snack platter loaded with assorted bites — a sociable, generous way to open a meal. From there, the kitchen applies the same straightforward philosophy to its mains. Perfectly cooked cod paired with a springy potato salad is a signature example: uncomplicated, honest, and genuinely tasty. There are options for vegetarians too, and the kitchen's restraint in the menu length signals confidence rather than limitation.

Recognition Worth Noting

The White Guide's 2026 recommendation places The Church among Sweden's noteworthy dining addresses — recognition that reflects both the quality of the food and the singular character of the space. For Sandviken, it is a point of local pride. For visitors passing through, it is a compelling reason to stop.

White Guide — Recomended

In 1905 the doors opened to the stately building, then a Baptist church. In 2014 it was time for an inauguration again, this time by a gastropub that would become hugely popular. The ceiling height, the impressive ceiling crown, and the colorful organ get a striking contrast against an otherwise modern interior in a wonderfully unique, fun, and quirky mix. In the middle of the venue is a large bar where drinks are shaken and the tap offers a selection of fifteen beers. Many start the meal with “Kyrktornet” – a three‑tier snack platter filled with assorted bites. The menu has something for everyone and offers few but well‑chosen dishes, such as perfectly cooked cod with a springy potato salad – uncomplicated and tasty. The service is both familiar and professional, confidently guiding guests with a resonant, guest‑focused approach.
