The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Manor with a Story Worth Tasting

Krokstad Herrgård sits in the Värmland countryside outside Säffle, a manor estate long known for pairing genuine hospitality with serious cooking. The property has built its reputation around a farm-to-table approach, raising Mangalitza — the prized Hungarian woolly pig — specifically for its own kitchen, and working closely with local producers to keep the food rooted in its landscape.

Dining in Unexpected Surroundings

While the main dining room and kitchen undergo renovation, guests are welcomed into a wagon trailer set behind the manor. It sounds unconventional, and it is — charmingly so. Exposed beams run both vertically and horizontally overhead, old utility objects line the walls, and a generous glass wall opens directly onto the forest. Most tables are filled with overnight guests, and the atmosphere is unhurried and genuinely warm rather than formally stiff.

The Five-Course Menu

The kitchen works through a five-course menu served à la carte, with each dish showing a clear hand and good instincts. Warm salmon arrives with pickled fennel on sushi rice with fine grains — a quiet, confident opener. A pan-seared scallop follows, paired with a purée of roasted cauliflower that delivers real depth. Then comes the Mangalitza pork, fried to a crisp and finished with a buttery orange sauce — the estate's signature ingredient given its proper moment. Goose with creamy mashed potato, lifted by a touch of syrup, rounds out the savoury courses before an extremely creamy crème brûlée closes the evening on a high note.

The wine list leans toward less familiar grape varieties, carefully chosen rather than simply safe.

Recognised for Good Reason

This approach to fine dining — local, seasonal, unhurried, served with a smile — has earned Krokstad Herrgård a place in the White Guide at Fine level, recognition that reflects both the quality on the plate and the sincerity of the experience around it. For a manor in a small Swedish town, that consistency is no small thing.

White Guide — Fine level

The regular dining room and kitchen are temporarily under renovation, so guests are referred to a wagon trailer behind the manor. It is a charming space with visible beams both vertically and horizontally, old utility items on the walls, and a large glass wall opening onto the forest. All the tables are occupied and most of the guests appear to be overnight visitors. The five‑course menu begins with warm salmon with pickled fennel, served on sushi rice with fine grains. This is followed by a gently pan‑seared scallop accompanied by a flavorful purée of roasted cauliflower, then the crisply fried Mangalitza pork with a buttery orange sauce. The goose is paired with a creamy mashed potato that has a sweet twist of syrup. The wine selection is carefully chosen with grape varieties that are not common. An extremely creamy crème brûlée serves as the final exclamation point of the dinner. Everything is served with a smile, à la carte, and in a homely, welcoming manner.
