The story
Grand Hotel Marstrand has anchored itself to the rocky island of Marstrand since 1892, and Restaurang Grand Tenan — the hotel's dining room and bar — carries that history with quiet confidence. The Johansson family and their staff take pride in making every guest feel at home, a sentiment that runs through the service as much as the stonework.
It is easy to picture the scene across the decades: guests strolling up from the quay through Paradisparken, past the grand wooden houses with their elaborately carved balconies, and arriving at the Grand's veranda, where the Tenan bar still resides today. The bar itself is built from a 100-year-old ship's rudder — a detail that says everything about the spirit of the place.
The kitchen works squarely within the French classic tradition. Expect the day's flat fish with fried new potatoes, hang-aged entrecôte with red-wine sauce, and gratinated crayfish that have become something of a signature on the Swedish west coast seafood circuit. What sets Tenan apart is the kitchen's refusal to cut corners — butter and cream are used without apology, and the quality of raw ingredients is treated as non-negotiable.
The menu carries the occasional personal twist, but the real talking point is a dish that has survived since the 1970s: ox fillet Africana, served with curry, coconut, peanuts, and canned mandarin. It sounds improbable. The staff will assure you it is delicious — and they are right to do so.
White Guide recognised Restaurang Grand Tenan at Fine level in 2026, noting the kitchen's generosity, ingredient quality, and the particular pleasure of finding that Africana still on the menu after all these years.
The back room at Tenan has a dark, unhurried atmosphere suited to sailors and anyone else who needs to thaw out after a day on the water. At the rudder bar, a stout or an Irish coffee does the job. In the height of summer, the restaurant opens for lunch in the park, with an unobstructed view down to the harbour — one of the more quietly spectacular tables on the west coast of Sweden.
The seafood-led menu, the old-school charm, and the harbour backdrop make Grand Tenan a reliable and genuinely characterful address in Marstrand, whether you are staying at the hotel or simply coming for dinner.
