Celebrated table

Åstols Rökeri

A harbour smokehouse on tiny island Åstol, celebrated for lightly smoked shrimp, legendary fish soup, and summer concerts at the edge of the sea.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

Food and Music, Right in the Middle of the Sea

Åstol is a small, weather-beaten island on Sweden's west coast, reached by ferry and shaped by generations of hard maritime life. The photographs and newspaper clippings that line the walls of Åstols Rökeri's spare dining room tell that story plainly. The community remains fully exposed to wind and weather, and the harbour can turn inhospitable in a gale. But that same exposure is precisely what makes the essentials feel essential here — the sea, the seasons, and what comes out of both.

The Smokehouse at the Heart of It

The restaurant grows directly from its own smokehouse, and fish and shellfish are the unambiguous focus. The head chef works with whatever the sea offers in season, and both fish and prawns are served straight from the in-house smoking operation. The lightly smoked shrimp have become something of a revelation for first-time visitors: flavour and springy texture preserved with a restraint that is rarer than it should be. White Guide, which recommends Åstols Rökeri in its 2026 edition, puts it plainly — for many guests, these shrimp are an aha experience. Then there is the fish soup, whose recipe is kept close by a tight circle of islanders. It has earned a quiet, local pride that no amount of description quite does justice to.

Outdoor Tables, Sunset, and Live Music

When the long, warm summer evenings arrive, the outdoor seating fills quickly. The backdrop is the open water to the west and, most nights in season, live music on the stage. The restaurant hosts a steady programme of concerts and events throughout the summer, and the most popular evenings sell out fast — something worth bearing in mind when planning a visit. Well-known musicians have made Åstol a regular stop for intimate performances, adding another layer to what is already an uncommonly atmospheric place to eat.

Beyond summer, the smokehouse and its kitchen carry their own quieter appeal. The whole venue can also be hired privately for parties and events, making it a singular setting for a celebration on the Swedish archipelago.

White Guide — Recomended

Little island Åstol offered its inhabitants a hard life, as pictures and newspaper clippings from Iseriet, the smokehouse’s barren dining room, testify. The community is still extremely exposed to weather and wind, and the otherwise well‑built harbor becomes immediately unpleasant in hard cheese. But first in need are life’s essentials fully exposed and valued. Like perfectly smoked shrimp. For many, the lightly smoked shrimp at Åstol’s smokehouse, where both flavor and springy texture are preserved, is an aha experience. This rare delicacy is prepared far too often disrespectfully for small gray curved necks. A local pride is also the fish soup, whose recipe only the islanders Gullan, Crown Princess Victoria and her gym buddy know. Despite the almost constantly rainy weather, the outdoor seating attracts many souls, not least numerous well‑known musicians during their intimate summer concerts. The most popular concerts sell out quickly and make certain days especially difficult for table reservations.
