The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Vision by the Quay

Strandkaj Kök & Bar was born from a conversation between friends Magnus Gästrin and Fredrik Warg, who felt Örnsköldsvik was missing a place where a slightly older crowd could gather for both business dinners and festive evenings. When hockey legend Markus Näslund unveiled his residential project in the inner harbour district, the idea found its home — and in spring 2020, Strandkaj opened its doors. Today the restaurant is led by Sandra Falck and a committed team, with the stated ambition of being the natural meeting point in town, whatever the occasion.

Modern Swedish Bistro Cooking

The kitchen works with seasonal ingredients and a menu that updates regularly to reflect what's fresh. The style is modern Swedish bistro — rustic and flavourful, with a careful touch. Starters include a beef tartare on butter-fried brioche with caramelised onion, horseradish and parmesan, a potato doughnut topped with whitefish roe and crème fraîche, and the signature råbiff served with capers, beetroot, Dijon mustard, pickled red onion and truffle mayonnaise. Main courses range from pan-fried pike-perch with citrus butter sauce and a warm potato salad, to entrecôte with wild garlic emulsion and parmesan, to an oven-baked pointed cabbage with beetroot hummus and browned butter. A three-course chef's menu — white asparagus, pike-perch, apple sorbet — offers a focused way through the kitchen's current thinking.

On Saturdays, the restaurant serves smørrebrød at lunch: three open-faced rye bread classics, each with its own character, from a fresh Skagen with horseradish and pickled cucumber to the classic råbiff.

Atmosphere and Recognition

The White Guide has recognised Strandkaj at a Very Fine Level — noting the unusually harmonious interplay between kitchen, dining room, lounge and staff. Soft carpets, calm textiles and gentle music create a setting where the food on the plate naturally becomes the focus. Guests can settle into plush armchairs in the dining area or relax in the lounge by the central bar. In summer, the outdoor terrace fills quickly, and it's easy to see why: the rolling silhouette of the High Coast stretches across the horizon, and sailing boats rock gently at the nearby quay.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the pace shifts — the cocktail lounge comes alive with creative drinks and a livelier energy, making Strandkaj equally at home as a destination for a quiet dinner or a proper night out.
