The story
Katrinelund sits on the southern shore of Lake Hjälmaren, about 25 kilometres east of Örebro, on a gentle rise that puts the water in full view of the dining room. The setting is not incidental — it shapes everything that comes out of the kitchen. Pike-perch pulled from Hjälmaren is listed on the menu with the names of the fishermen who caught it. Meat and vegetables arrive from farms in the surrounding area. The most well-travelled ingredient, according to the kitchen's own account, is squid from Sweden's west coast.
The restaurant's Gästgiveriet dining room earned a Very Fine Level distinction from White Guide 2026, and the review reads like a precise record of an evening that gets the details right from start to finish. Guests are met with a genuinely warm welcome and sent off with a small sugar cake alongside their coffee. In between, the menu moves at a considered pace, with thorough presentations of each course and clear explanations of where every ingredient originates.
Two amuse-bouches arrive before the menu proper: smoked lamb heart wrapped in pak choi, served on stone; then a duck mousse topped with confit duck, presented in a wooden bowl. The pike-perch head — a recurring fixture — continues to draw reactions across the room, from broad smiles to mild hesitation. The kitchen's young chefs come to the tables themselves to present the main courses, a choice that keeps the cooking personal and the sourcing transparent.
The interior is dark, but large windows draw in enough light that the space never feels heavy. The building reads as old — because it is — yet everything feels freshly considered rather than preserved for its own sake. The service team is young and, as White Guide noted, consistently professional and attentive.
The broader Katrinelund property includes a lakeside summer restaurant (Sjökrogen), accommodation ranging from standard rooms to a glass igloo moored at the jetty, a spa and relaxation area, and a raft that takes groups out onto Hjälmaren for dinner on the water. The Gästgiveriet restaurant, open year-round for pre-booked meals, conferences and celebrations, is where the most focused Swedish cuisine is served — ingredient-led, locally anchored and, in the words of the kitchen, defined by "joy and humility in cooking."
The combination of a meaningful view, honest sourcing and a team that clearly enjoys what it does makes this a destination worth the detour.
