Celebrated table

Vita Amandi

Vita Amandi in Nässjö serves an uncompromising four-course Swedish menu inside a converted church, earning White Guide recognition for its bold, local flavours.

The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A church with a point of view

Vita Amandi occupies a converted church near the railway station in Nässjö, and the setting alone would be enough to make an impression. The name draws from Saint Amandus — patron saint of winemakers, among others — and that devotion to wine runs straight through the kitchen philosophy: the menu is built around the wines, not the other way around.

The team's stated ambition is to run a restaurant "with passion and absolutely uncompromising," which is a particular challenge this far from Sweden's major cities. White Guide awarded the restaurant its Very Fine Level distinction, and the recognition feels earned.

The menu, and the mystery

There is no printed menu at Vita Amandi. To preserve what the restaurant calls the church's sense of mystery, the kitchen decides — four courses, composed around availability, season and creativity. Allergies and dietary preferences are handled with care, provided guests flag them in advance.

The meal typically opens with freshly baked pyttelimpan on local flour. From there, Fröyalax salmon arrives with dill oil, broccoli purée and pickled cauliflower, the smoky emulsions drawing particular attention. A lamb tenderloin follows, paired with mushrooms, parsnip purée, onion and produce from a local farmer, finished with a sauce made from what the kitchen describes as "far-too-expensive wines left over from the weekend." The cheese course leans on Fröset Farm Dairy and Räven & Osten, before the finale: an almond madeleine alongside tonka-bean ice cream, licorice fudge, blueberry marshmallow and vanilla sauce.

It is unambiguously Swedish in its sourcing and sensibility, yet the plate compositions have real range. White Guide called it "a flavor kaleidoscope" — that reads accurately.

Beyond the dining room

The space holds more than one room. Nässjö Ölkafé, a convivial pub wall-to-wall with the restaurant, serves burgers and fish and chips with house-baked bread and homemade mayonnaise — walk-ins only. Above the main dining room, the old organ loft has been converted into Café Rosé, a champagne and wine bar that works equally well for a pre-dinner drink or a private evening. The entire venue is available for private hire, and guided tastings — beer, wine, rum and whisky — can be arranged for groups of six or more.

The innkeepers themselves wrote that the concept will "carry or crack." On the evidence of what reaches the table, it carries.

White Guide — Very fine level

Saint Amandus, the loving one, is the patron saint of, among other things, winemakers and has inspired the name of Nässjö’s tavern celebrity that resides in an old church near the railway station. The place is incredibly cool, but White Amandi is much more than its eye‑catching premises. The team behind it wants to run a restaurant “with passion and absolutely uncompromising,” which of course is a particular challenge far from the big cities. Yet the affordable four‑course menu is truly an experience. White Amandi seems to have decided that most of the dishes should be small, tiny enough to make room for a lot — variety. And it’s a real flavor kaleidoscope that kicks off with the freshly baked “pyttelimpan” on local flour. The silky Fröyalax (a type of salmon) is paired with dill oil, broccoli purée, pickled cauliflower and other items, where the smoky “click” emulsions stand out. It’s (perhaps?) a lot of information to take in, but friendly staff steer things confidently, also in the wine selections. The lamb tenderloin might have used a bit more salt and a tougher sear, but together with mushrooms, parsnip purée, onion and other produce from the local farmer, and a sauce made from “far‑too‑expensive wines left over from the weekend,” this dish also becomes a little expedition. Local food craftsmanship continues on the cheese plate from Fröset Farm Dairy as well as Räven & Osten before the almond‑madeline arrives with a handful of treats such as tonka‑bean ice cream, licorice fudge, blueberry marshmallow and vanilla sauce. It will “carry or crack,” write the innkeepers, seemingly unsure whether the concept will hold. Yes, we are convinced it will.
