The story
In the quiet town of Mariefred, between grocery stores and weaving workshops, sits Rakstugan — a restaurant that occupies the premises of a barbershop with roots going back to the 1930s. The space is deliberately small: six tables inside, six outdoors. What it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in character and warmth.
The restaurant is run by Johan and Maria, who have shaped Rakstugan around a simple and satisfying idea: order what you like, as much as you like. The menu is built around small plates — tapas and open-faced sandwiches in their own style — designed so that one dish makes a light meal and two or three make a proper feast. Dishes arrive as soon as they're ready, rather than in a rigid sequence, which gives the meal an easy, unhurried rhythm.
White Guide recognized Rakstugan at Fine level in 2026, noting its big heart despite its modest size — a rare distinction for a restaurant with just twelve covers in total.
All dishes on the menu are also available for takeaway. Guests can call ahead during regular opening hours, or send a message through social media, and collect their order at the door. Payment by card or Swish is accepted.
Rakstugan is the kind of place Mariefred is lucky to have — unpretentious, personal, and quietly excellent.
