The story

Crafted with passion, served with love

A Luleå Institution Beside the Lule River

Hemmagastronomi sits at Norra Strandgatan 1, right on the waterfront in Luleå, where the Lule River glitters in summer and transforms into a sparkling ice road in winter. That setting alone gives the place a rare quality — an archipelago feeling in the middle of a northern Swedish city. In 2018, Simon and Emma Laiti undertook a full renovation and reopening, emerging with a larger, airier space that now includes a proper dining room, a bakery, a bar, and a deli stocked with local and continental delicacies.

The result has drawn both Luleå regulars and visitors throughout the week, and the White Guide has recognised it at a very fine level — a mark of the consistent, flavourful cooking that comes out of this kitchen.

The Food

The menu rotates with the seasons, but certain dishes have earned classic status: Kalix bleak roe, beef tartare, and dry-aged meat from North Bothnian farms are fixtures. The shellfish platter is famous enough to be called out by name. Beyond the classics, the kitchen works with local produce and international technique — crayfish soup with scallop mousseline and crown dill cucumber, reindeer topside with parsley root purée and calvados jus, grilled rose fish with tomato vinaigrette, olives and capers. Portions are generous and carefully presented. Desserts — including a chocolate preparation with baked meringue and bilberry sorbet — have their own following.

The wine programme is taken seriously. Staff are knowledgeable about pairings, and the bar offers a lighter route in: a few oysters, a glass of champagne, or smaller dishes for those not committing to a full dinner.

Beyond the Dining Room

Hemmagastronomi is more than a restaurant. The deli carries artisan cheeses, charcuterie from small-scale producers, dry-aged meat, seafood, specialty coffee and equipment. The bakery handles custom orders. The matstudio — a cooking studio on site — runs open cooking classes and tastings throughout the year, covering themes from dry-aged beef and Italian cuisine to fish and shellfish, champagne pairings and wine varietals like Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. Private events and conferences can also be arranged in the space.

A weekly Helggourmet bag — a pre-composed seasonal meal kit — rounds out the offer for those who want restaurant-quality cooking at home. This breadth, combined with the quality of the kitchen, is what makes Hemmagastronomi a genuine anchor for food culture in northern Sweden.

White Guide — Very fine level

In the summer of 2018, Simon and Emma Laiti reopened their totally renovated restaurant – bigger and airier, with comfortable seating, a bakery, a pleasant bar and a larger deli. It has proven a great success, with Luleå locals and visitors converging on the new Hemmagastronomi throughout the week. The restaurant’s location next to the glittering Lule River in summer and the sparkling ice road in winter creates a feeling of archipelago in the middle of town. The menu includes seasonal dishes as well as the famous shellfish platter and Hemmagastronomi classics such as beef tartare and dry-aged meat from North Bothnian farms. The crayfish soup with scallop mousseline and crown dill cucumber is silky and wonderfully salty-acidic. A topside of reindeer is perfectly cooked and melts in your mouth along with a lovely parsley root purée and calvados jus. Grilled rose fish with a tomato vinaigrette, olives and lots of capers make a brilliant combination. Portions are large and attractively presented. Desserts here are always a hit. A chocolate variety with baked meringue and bilberry sorbet is a work of art that tastes as good as it looks. Well-composed, flavourful dishes require the right wine, and knowledgeable staff point you to the best pairings. If you’re not that hungry, or are heading elsewhere later, take a seat at the new bar and enjoy a few oysters and a glass of champagne, or one of the other tasty small dishes. The new Hemmagastronomi is a triumph.
